In 2021, the idea of fur fashion will completely change, and fashion designers will use fur as a material to improve clothing. Furs add style and uniqueness to a woman's look.
Fur trends are constantly changing, so it’s difficult to say exactly what kind of fur will be trendy in 2021 . But now in the pre-fall collections of leading designers you can see that fur is used as decoration.
Be that as it may, women's fashion will be incomplete if it does not include fur accessories. Where would we be without a stylish vest, boa, cape, fur poncho or cape? In addition, fur is used as a material for combining. It is combined with leather, suede, velor.
In the fall-winter 2021-2022 season, any wardrobe items made from natural fur are trending. These are fur coats, muffs, hats, scarves, capes. The monochromatic shades that bore us are being replaced by bold, bright colors and prints that imitate floral patterns and the natural color of animal skins.
The length of fur products can be any. Now girls can choose the optimal length for themselves, based on their lifestyle. So, car enthusiasts can choose a shortened version of a fur coat - a short-haired car lady jacket.
If you spend a lot of time outside, feel free to choose a fur coat that is below the knee length. You will feel warm and comfortable in it.
Fur fashion 2021 embodies stylish mink items that can be made in both classic and sporty styles. They carry a certain claim to luxury, but at the same time, they are restrained and laconic.
Fur 2021-2022: new fur styles
At the peak of fur fashion are fur coats made of natural fur with a classic cut . Such models do not lose their versatility regardless of fashion trends.
Such models can be seen in Christian Dior collections. To create stylish fur coats, thick natural fur in different colors was used.
The classic cut can be seen in the pre-fall collections of fur houses Blumarine and Fendi. On the catwalk, models shone in expensive business coats just below the knee.
Fur coats are distinguished by their practicality and conservatism. The trend that can be seen in the collections is long coats made of short-cropped thick fur or coats just below the knee, with a clearly defined waistline.
Trend - Print
If in past seasons fur coats made using the intarsia technique were at the height of fashion, in 2020 we are increasingly seeing fashionable fur coats with prints. The technology of digital printing on fur allows you to create a pattern not only on the fur, but also on the inside and expand the possibilities of using fur.
But more often, designers create subtle complex patterns on fashionable fur coats with prints 2021 2021 that imitate patterns on fabric, such as tartan and “chicken’s foot”.
Fur vests: models and colors
Fur vests will never lose their relevance, because they are practical and comfortable, they are warm and comfortable. Moreover, vests made of natural fur are beautiful.
In winter 2021, fashionistas will finally be able to choose what they like. The styles of fashionable vests are replete with variety: from a floor-length model to a practical sleeveless vest that reaches the waistline! At the same time, both of them look impressive.
As for the shape and cut of fur vests, they can be either A-shaped or fitted. The same applies to the length of the fur.
In the fall-winter 2021-2022 season, both long raccoon fur and short sheared mink fur are in trend.
The shape of the collar is also different. There's plenty to choose from :
- models with stand-up collar
- models with English collar
- or without it at all.
Patch pockets and kimono belts serve as decoration.

Search for innovative alternatives
Many brands today say that they are ready to invest in the development of new materials that would replace the good old skins. New York-based Maison Atia, led by sixth-generation furrier Chloe Mendel, has announced that it is committed to finding a worthy replacement for the highest quality hand-woven fur made from alternative materials.
Another example is Hannah Weiland's London-based brand Shrimps, which is incredibly popular among models, editors and celebrities. Weiland told Vogue that working with faux fur opened up new professional perspectives for her: “I learned hundreds of techniques and effects. Faux fur is a very versatile material. I especially enjoy creating jacquards; I love how the plush pile of faux fur creates depth and an almost 3D effect.”
However, the main problem of artificial fur is its environmental inferiority: production from synthetic materials, short wear life and biological non-degradability. On the other hand, wearing and storing real fur also requires very harmful chemical treatments. Other “warm” alternatives, such as mohair or sheep's wool, are also by-products of animal agriculture. All these are extremely controversial issues, and both animal rights activists and opponents of artificial materials have rational arguments.

Stella McCartney, whose brand has been vegan since its founding in 2001, recently came up with an option that could be a step forward for anyone concerned about the environmental footprint of faux fur. In September, Stella announced Koba Fur-Free Fur, which is a blend of recycled polyester and plant-based materials.

Natural fur hats
In winter, fur hats made of natural fur are in fashion.
Women's hat with earflaps
A hat with earflaps, like felt boots, has become an integral attribute of the image. Whether you wear a hat with or without buboes is up to you, both are in fashion.
Since the trend is to combine fabrics of different textures and colors, earflap hats are no exception. Ushanka can be combined with textiles. The upper part can be made of suede or leather, as in the photo.
The fur preferred by famous designers is fox, silver fox and arctic fox.
Mongol
Mongolian - a fur hat of a non-standard cut. For its sewing, voluminous fur is used. With this hat you will stand out from the crowd. Mongolian is an excellent option for minimalist ladies who prefer to have only practical things in their wardrobe. You can combine it with any warm clothing.
Malachai
A malachai hat made of natural fur is another headdress option for 2021 . Long-pile fur is used to sew it, and the hat itself is decorated with a chic tail, which gives the owner of this outfit femininity and some zest.
The fashion for fur winter hats 2021 is not limited to a few models. In addition to the above-mentioned hat models, small short-haired hats in the shape of a bowler hat are trending.
The hood has always been an excellent option for headwear. 2021 will be no exception. The fur hood is very warm and will protect not only your head, but also your neck from the cold wind. This option is perfect for those ladies who don’t like to wear too much.
Gloves with fur
This season, gloves with fur trim have become fashionable. We remember that fur 2021 has become an integral trend of the season. It doesn’t matter whether the gloves are leather or suede, decorated with fur they look stylish and expensive.
Mittens are a modern invention that gives absolute freedom of movement. This year, fingerless gloves were introduced in the Ashley Williams, Dolce & Gabbana collection.
Unfortunately, despite their beauty, mittens are impractical and will not warm you in cold weather, but you can use them as the finishing touch to your look, just don’t forget about a beautiful manicure.
Mittens can be called an excellent alternative to bracelets. To decorate them, designers use lace, rhinestones, and complement them with lacing, beautiful chains and straps.
Bags with fur decoration
Fashionable bags have embodied all the wildest fantasies of world famous designers. To create them, reptile skin, suede, pendants, and, of course, fur are used. The trend is short fur, which is mixed with snake skin, resulting in masterpieces for creating a stylish look.
In 2021, designers invite us to wear bags with fur handles. In this case, the fur used to trim them should be long and fluffy. The squeak of fashion is an artificial mouton or astrakhan fur.
The color range of fur bags 2021-2022 is extensive, but still, it is worth giving preference to natural tones.
Fur bags and fur backpacks should be in the same color and be a neutral shade. If you want to add some extra flair, decorate your fur handbag with a pompom or brooch.
Handbags in the shape of animals, for example, a bunny bag, or a bag that imitates a soft pillow or a toy animal with glass eyes and gold chains over the shoulder, will delight you.
What alternatives will replace natural fur?
The end of the fur era
In December 2021, natural fur coats unexpectedly sold out in New York, the New York Post reported.
Marc Kaufman, owner of the Marc Kaufman Furs store in Chelsea, admitted to the publication that sales are so good that he cannot keep up with the demand for fur products priced from $1,000 to $10,000. At the beginning of the pandemic, he was preparing for a 45% drop in income, however in 2021, on the contrary, they grew by 10%. Business has also improved for the owner of the Dimitrios Furs store, Dimitri Lettas, whose number of orders has increased by 20%. According to him, mainly young women aged 25 to 35 showed interest in fur - they purchased items such as cashmere capes trimmed with fox fur. Older ladies opted for natural fur coats made from mink or fox—some particularly elaborate pieces cost up to $6,995. Fur sellers attributed the increase in sales to cold weather and restrictions due to coronavirus infection. Entrepreneurs believed that they were purchasing fur coats to spend more time outside, since since December 11 in New York it has been prohibited to enter restaurant premises, and guests are forced to eat outside.
However, the general trend is not changing, according to fashion experts and retailers: the pandemic has seriously hit both the production and sale of fur products, despite individual manifestations of demand, as in New York. According to the International Fur Federation (IFF), the market value was estimated at $22 billion in 2021, down 45% from $40 billion in 2015. “The past year has been the toughest year I have ever known,” Mark Outen, executive director of the fur federation, told The Business of Fashion. “The dynamics of the industry have changed a lot.”
The extermination of mink, which was found to have a coronavirus mutation, in Denmark put an end to the development of mink coat production in the country. According to experts, the fight for animal rights would sooner or later force the closure of mink production. Now Kopenhagen Fur, the world's largest fur auction house, a cooperative of Danish farmers, is preparing to close in 2023. Before the pandemic, the auction house sold 40% of the world's mink pelts, as well as chinchilla and fox pelts, and had a 60% market share, according to the company. The company still has about DKK 10 billion ($1.62 billion) worth of hides, according to Kopenhagen Fur chief executive Jesper Lauge Christensen. But after they are sold, the liquidation of the business will begin. “It’s been a terrible year for Denmark,” Christensen said. “This is the end of the fur farming industry in Denmark as we know it.”
Euromonitor International estimates that global production of fur and fur products (including faux fur) fell by 2.6% last year. In Western Europe the decline was 13.3%. “The integrity of the product supply chain has become a public health and moral issue, making the future of the fur industry very uncertain,” explained Irina Ivanova, luxury and fashion consultant at Euromonitor International.
In Russia, negative dynamics in sales are also noted. “At the beginning of 2021, there were no significant changes in retail prices for products made from natural fur on the market,” Vlada Ivanyuk, deputy commercial director, told Gazeta.Ru. “This is due to the fact that in 2021 there was an abnormally warm autumn, and there was no winter in central Russia. Buyers who did purchase winter outerwear made from natural fur that year were never able to wear it.” According to her,
sales in the market as a whole fell from 25 to 50% in 2021 compared to 2018, as a result, sellers of winter clothing at the beginning of 2021 accumulated large balances of goods, and buyers still had unworn new clothes.
2020 brought even more challenges for businesses. “The introduction of quarantine completely stopped sales, then there was a short period of increased demand in the clothing retail sector, which was most likely due to people’s fatigue from isolation; I wanted to please myself,” Ivanyuk explained. “The purchase of expensive goods became a deliberate investment, since instability in exchange rates, rising gold prices, and falling oil prices caused people to fear for their existing savings and uncertainty about the future.”
The active surge in sales of expensive fur products quickly ended, and a further decline in purchasing activity was influenced by several factors - the expectation of a possible repeat of a warm winter, the resumption of lockdown and restrictions on activity, an increase in the incidence of diseases, a decrease in household incomes, and an increase in the number of people who have lost their jobs. The expert estimates a decrease in turnover from 25% to 45% on average for the natural fur clothing market in 2021 compared to 2019, while interest has grown and turnover has increased in such categories of winter outerwear as jackets and down jackets, models made from more affordable types of fur. Fur coats, however, were named by some retailers as one of the most popular New Year's gifts in Russia.
Now, due to the extermination of minks on fur farms in Denmark and the increased rush demand for mink skins at auctions, prices for finished fur products may increase by 15-40%, the expert predicts.
“Changes in demand are difficult to assess in advance, since they depend on general changes in retail prices, including changes in exchange rates, the economic and epidemiological situation,” she added. — We assume that the demand for outerwear made of natural fur may remain approximately at the level of the current season. Be that as it may, the fur industry has a long history. For Russian buyers, natural fur is not just warm and beautiful; a fur product is also a sign of prestige and wealth.”
According to Ivanyuk, the advantage of natural fur is its longer service life compared to faux fur products.
Not fashionable and not youthful
Experts from the fashion world are less optimistic. Thus, Alexander Shumsky, president of the National Chamber of Fashion and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia, notes that more and more large brands are abandoning the production of clothing using natural fur and are looking towards new materials. “Chanel, Prada, H&M - there are dozens of companies in the world that over the past few years have announced the cessation of production of fur wardrobe items. Moreover, the production of natural fur is seriously limited in many European countries, and in Austria, the Netherlands, Croatia, Slovenia, Norway, and the Czech Republic it is completely prohibited,” Shumsky added.
Against the backdrop of the development of the trend towards environmental friendliness and the transition to remote work, as well as a decrease in fur production in Russia and a decrease in the purchasing power of the population, no growth in demand for fur products is expected in our country in the next few years, the expert believes. “Moreover, clothing stores offer modern solutions - artificial fur coats, which, of course, are inferior in thermal characteristics to real ones, but look pretty good and allow you to take care of the environment,” Shumsky concluded.
If in New York, according to entrepreneurs, the demand for fur coats increased in December, then in Los Angeles, on the contrary, a ban on the trade and production of products made from natural fur came into force.
“I don’t think that a one-time increase in sales in New York is a trend: information about an increase in sales of fur products may just be another move by sellers to attract consumers’ attention to buying fur,” explained the president of the National Chamber of Fashion. — I would not share the optimistic forecast of some manufacturers that the fur industry will grow in the future. In some markets, such as China, consumption of natural fur may return to pre-Covid levels, but even then it is unlikely. The principles of sustainable consumption, which do not include fur, do not yet influence consumption in China as much as in the West. Therefore, today China is the largest market for fur products. But even he is moving along an environmentally friendly path, replacing fur coats with no less warm, but humane analogues.”
According to Shumsky, for countries with cold climates, natural furs are still relevant, but synthetic and innovative solutions are also appearing there that fulfill the task of insulation. “Here it is appropriate to recall a young Russian startup from St. Petersburg, which figured out how to apply heating elements to fabric, rather than placing a battery under the lining - the Red Fox company already does such things,” the expert gives an example. — Jackets made of such fabric are able to retain heat in extreme conditions at ultra-low temperatures. Such things, if well designed, can become trendy and make the words “fur coat” and “down jacket” obsolete.”
As part of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Russia shows, several years ago they stopped showing real fur. “This was a conscious decision related specifically to the ethics of the issue,” explains Shumsky. “Many fashion week participants, including Russian ones, follow the principles of sustainable development, so it is important for us to format the event so that it resonates with the aesthetics of young designers of the new generation.”
Fur without fur and harm to nature
Designer Yulia Ivanov, founder of the Unicorn Furs brand, which makes things from faux fur, also believes that the natural fur industry has come to an end. “Natural fur has lost its position, in many countries the sale of natural fur has been banned, so there are no longer even protests from animal rights activists,” explained Yulia. “Covid has finished off farms in Denmark and in Europe: this is the end of the industry as it was.”
Fur is considered unecological not only because animals are bred for its production, which greatly pollutes the soil, air and water, but also because the skins are treated with formaldehyde and other toxic substances. This makes fur production harmful to both fur farm workers and the planet.
“If you bury a natural fur coat in the ground, it will not decompose, just like plastic,” explains Yulia Ivanov. “That’s why now some companies that can afford it are working with faux fur made from recycled PET plastic – for example, from plastic bottles. Regular polyester faux fur can also be recycled, but it is expensive and difficult, but developments are being made in this direction.”

In addition, faux fur is much easier to care for, which extends its lifespan, the designer adds. According to her, sustainable clothing consumption is about wearing the item for as long as possible and not throwing it away, but passing it on to someone. “I explain to buyers how to properly wash and decontaminate faux fur items, why they should not be washed at high temperatures or dried on heating devices, and how to store them correctly, on a hanger or folded,” shared Yulia. “And if you don’t like an item, it’s better to give it to a second-hand store or to friends, or exchange it at a swap shop.”
Real fur can also be made more environmentally friendly if you buy it second-hand rather than in a store, says stylist and sustainability expert in fashion Olga Johnston-Antonova. “In Russia there is still a demand for fur due to traditions, climate and mentality,” the expert believes. — Fur will be popular here for a long time. But the production of fur coats from the fur of animals raised for slaughter for the sake of beauty will go away. After all, you don’t have to buy a fur coat in a store and kill animals - fur coats are sold in second-hand stores, they can be remade from vintage fur, this is a new trend.”

According to Olga, in Berlin, for example, such fur products can be bought at flea markets for pennies and turned into a beautiful and fashionable item in an atelier. “There are, of course, people who will never wear fur, because this is their principle. And there are many alternatives for them. But no one sprays green paint on people wearing fur anymore, because they see that the fur coat is clearly vintage, and therefore environmentally friendly,” sums up the stylist.
Boots with pile
Boots trimmed with fur can easily be called one of the most fashionable trends for the fall-winter season 2021-2022.
High-top sneakers and winter women's platform boots are created specifically for those fashionistas who boldly follow global trends in the fashion world.
High boots are an excellent shoe option in case the frost hits -50 degrees.
Ankle boots and boots in the old Russian style are not inferior to high boots. They're warm and look pretty cute.
