What is eco-fur: composition, advantages and disadvantages

Just thinking about faux fur can make real fashionistas very upset and cringe. The main problem lies in the fact that one of the first associations that appears after mentioning faux fur is certainly associated with huge, weighty, different-colored items of winter clothing, which were quite popular during the Soviet era. Things are completely different with natural fur coats. But such a joy costs its owner a fantastic amount of money and is practically not particularly practical.

In addition, in recent years, people who defend animal rights and environmental protection have had a fairly energetic and offensive attitude against famous people and famous couturiers who cannot imagine how one can live without natural fur, which costs fabulous money. Fortunately, today's designers have come up with eco-fur; you will understand what an eco-fur coat is if you read this article in full.

What is eco-fur?

Ecological fur is an artificially created material that is very soft, warm and light. Externally, a product on such a basis looks impressive, not much different from natural material. For example, if they make eco-fur with mink, then only a professional with experience can find discrepancies with the original.

This is explained by the fact that all villi are created on the basis of polyacrylonitrile fibers, so they do not get clogged into clumps, but are distributed evenly. The fibers also contain viscose. To create artificial eco-fur, ordinary knitted fabric is used as a base.

Production methods

An artificial product, as a rule, is made on the basis of two textures that almost copy the structure of real fur. As mentioned earlier, first of all you need a knitted fabric, which is created from synthetic and natural fibers. Villi or hairs are already glued onto this fabric, and they are also attached by spraying. The appearance itself ultimately speaks of a high-quality product, since it turns out to be identical to the fur of the animal.

In addition to polyacrylonitrile, the fibers contain polyester fiber - it is also called lavsan, and nylon or a polyamide component.

The villi or hairs are attached to the base itself using 3 methods:

  • Knitting and stitching. Involves knitting fibers into the warp thread.
  • Fabric stitched. The warp thread already includes synthetic fibers.
  • Glue. The fibers are glued, and the result is a very wear-resistant material that can be combed.
  • The option with gluing in fibers makes the product look like nutria, arctic fox, or mink fur. The result is the most beautiful eco-fur coats made from this type of faux fur.

To achieve this kind of similarity, a different-shrink method is used, that is, the product contains both long fibers and small, fluffy ones. As you know, animals' fur has the same structure.

To introduce various variations of faux fur to the masses, it is often dyed in other colors that are similar to the natural product. The material can also be trimmed, if necessary, to make some fibers shorter and some longer.

Faux fur in women's clothing

Not only fur coats are made from it, but also coats, sweaters, and vests. Cardigans, sheepskin coats, mantles and winter leather jackets, popular this season, are decorated with fur. Faux fur, plain and multi-colored, bright and muted, is one of the main decorations of outerwear. A special lining, which is equipped with products made from eco-friendly materials, will help keep you from freezing. It is often combined with leather, wool, and suede. In autumn, fur coats are especially popular, and in winter, fashionistas prefer short fur coats and sheepskin coats.

Faux fur coat

This season, capes and oversized coats are trendy. A cape with slits for arms, trimmed with fur, is one of the main trends of 2019. Mini and maxi products look elegant and expensive, reliably keep you warm in cold weather and go well with almost any wardrobe item. The cape goes well with formal trousers, leather leggings and skinny jeans. You can wear it with a skirt or dress (but its hem should not be lower than the hem of the cape).

A “fluffy” oversized product, like a plush faux fur coat, is the choice of young girls who love comfort. Most models imitate the cozy fur of a young lamb. Products with llama fur look just as impressive, but they are mainly combined with other materials, using wool as decoration. It is recommended to wear an oversized coat with a narrow bottom (trousers, jeans, leggings) and a loose top (shirts, jumpers).

Faux fur coat

This is an excellent choice for cold winters. Moreover, the designers presented many interesting models. Colored faux fur coats made in patchwork style are especially popular. On the catwalks you can see both elongated models made of color blocks and plain but bright fur coats. They add zest to the image, making it unique and festively cheerful. On sale you can find products with checkered, leopard and geometric prints.

Faux fur sheepskin coat

A fashionable sheepskin coat can completely replace an expensive fur coat. Faux sheepskin fur is mainly used as insulation and decoration. Such products delight with their beauty, practicality and ability to warm even in the most severe frost. In addition to sheepskin jackets, a variety of styles are in demand this season. Among the current colors are ash gray, red, burgundy, olive, chocolate, apricot.

Many products are made in oversized baggy fashion and decorated with all kinds of decor - embroidery, leather inserts. The latter are recommended to be combined with other leather elements - for example, shoes or a skirt. A sweatshirt or bomber jacket can be chosen as a top. Short shearling coats look amazing with boho-chic dresses, business suits and casual clothes.

Faux fur vest

A warm sleeveless short fur coat (that is, a vest) is another favorite this season. Among the popular styles:

  • shortened and long sleeveless vests;
  • classic models that are fastened with buttons, snaps, zippers or secured with a belt;
  • short sleeve vests;
  • fur products with knitted or leather sleeves that are unfastened along the shoulder line;
  • "Kimono" - vests with a wrap.

A faux fur vest allows you to create the most extravagant looks - from business to glamorous. Eco-material “mink” remains the most popular, but the Arctic fox (especially colored models) can compete with it. You can combine fur vests with knitted dresses, various types of jeans, narrow and wide trousers, leggings, and leather skirts.

Parka with faux fur

This style has remained popular for several years. These are practical jackets that are designed specifically for bad weather. But fur inserts make them more impressive and make the look more interesting and feminine. These jackets, although they belong to the sports style of clothing, are recommended by stylists to be combined with skirts, dresses, jeans, and high-heeled shoes. Fashionistas who prefer an informal style will like men's boots with rough soles - berets. Especially if you wear them under a military-style parka with fur. The parka looks amazing with a leather skirt.

A faux fur jacket goes well with different types of jeans (including ripped ones), leather leggings, and skinny trousers. You can combine a knitted dress or a sweater dress with a parka. The color must be selected carefully if the fur of the jacket is painted in some bright and rich color - pink, orange, blue. Hikers are also suitable as shoes - city trekking boots are now in trend.

Denim with faux fur

Denim outerwear (jackets, vests) is back in fashion. Warmer models are trimmed with a variety of eco-fur. Voluminous due to its splendor, it can imitate the wool of a young lamb, llama or mink. Fur can decorate the entire length of the product or just the collar. Most models are made in a cozy oversized style. The product can be worn not only with jeans or skinny trousers, but also with more feminine wardrobe items - dresses and skirts. A denim jacket with faux fur looks good with leather items.

Faux fur bomber

The bomber jacket is one of the most practical and stylish jackets, so it has not gone out of fashion for several seasons. They produce a model in sport-chic, military, and unisex styles. The bomber jacket is distinguished from other jackets by its shorter length, thick cuffs on each sleeve, elastic trim on the collar and the presence of side pockets. Among fur-trimmed bombers, there are models with ¾ sleeves. A faux fur sweater looks especially impressive with straight cropped jeans, but you can wear casual midi dresses and military-style trousers underneath it.

Faux fur hat

A women's faux fur hat has become the main accessory of fashion shows 2021. Models in retro style look especially interesting. Models of fur dads echo them. French couturiers are especially passionate about these products, for whom the theme of Russian national costume is a source of original ideas. There is no need to be afraid of the brutality of this style - soft, luxurious materials turn such models into very feminine and flirty.

This season there are no flashy shades - only naturalness and noble luxury. They require a special combination of textures in the image. No fur coats! Tweed and cashmere coats and sheepskin coats are suitable. Mixing two furs is considered bad manners, but if you really want to, a coat of smooth cropped fur in combination with a voluminous fluffy hat is acceptable.

Faux short fur and products made from it are another trend. Berets that imitate rabbit fur, mink, and sheepskin look flirty. Designers have returned bonnets to the catwalk, complementing them with long “ears” that can successfully replace a scarf. These fur hats for the winter of 2021 are made from smoothly cut and sometimes knitted fur. The model is not designed for overly respectable images, but rather extravagant and frankly youthful ones.

Distinctive features

What is eco-fur and what makes it different? Modern manufacturing technology has made it possible to achieve unprecedented results in the form of a homogeneous fabric that is almost impossible to distinguish from the real product. Eco-fur today is a warm material that copes with all the adversities of the weather. Unlike natural fur, ecological fur is able to resist moisture, keep its shape for a long time, and not pill or cake. Eco-fur in the photo even looks much better than natural fur.

It is very different from its “predecessor” in technical parameters:

  • Weight.
  • Softness and pliability.
  • Fiber uniformity.
  • Resistant to wet weather.
  • Keeps all the heat inside, keeps the cold out.
  • It lasts a long time and remains in perfect condition.
  • Faux eco-fur has greatly changed all its indicators over the past century. Previously, it was an inconvenient, quickly worn-out material, which, moreover, did not look very beautiful. Now eco-fur has begun to look luxurious and provide better warmth.

What does an eco-fur coat look like?

Eco fur is a completely new material that has properties similar to natural raw materials. The appearance of the pile is almost identical to natural. Although if you touch these two such different furs, you will understand that they are different. These clothes have perfectly even fibers of the same size. Clothing made from this material is warm and does not allow moisture to pass through.

The technological process of producing eco-fur is becoming more and more advanced all the time. Because of this, raw materials are often used to make a wide range of outerwear items. People who have bought clothes made from this material speak highly of it, often comparing it with natural material. It goes without saying that the manufacture of artificial material has made it cheaper to sew warm garments.

Note: quality items, even if they are synthetic, cannot be cheap. So don't run for a very cheap price.

Advantages and disadvantages of faux fur

    • Even with a modest income, you can buy yourself a stylish fur coat that imitates the skin of any animal.
    • A large assortment of models makes it possible for women of any age category to choose the right option.
    • The base of the eco-fur coat is a woven fabric that will warm its owner very well even in very severe frosts.
    • Having bought a fur coat that is below the knees, a woman will have the opportunity to wear it to parties and look very impressive at them. Fashionistas who like to look sporty can buy themselves a cropped model in white or gray, which will quite elegantly emphasize the slim figure.
    • The main advantage of eco-fur coats is that to sew them you do not need to destroy unique animals, of which there are fewer and fewer on the planet. And from this it follows that there is no harm to the environment.

Note: No matter how flattering the customer reviews about the artificial fur coats you see in the photo are, it must be said that these products have a number of disadvantages. These include poor thermal insulation when compared with natural materials.

In addition, after a couple of years, the synthetic fiber does not adhere to lint and the product begins to look like a shedding animal. Another property that is considered a disadvantage is uneven coloring. That is why, when inspecting a product made from a substitute for natural fur, you should take a close look at its quality. If the villi do not hold well and fall out, then it is better to refuse the purchase. Most likely, the fur coat was made with violations of production technology and it will not last long. Why do we need eco-fur?

Nowadays, fur-based products are very common at fashion shows. Designers actively use it to reveal their ideas to the fullest. Many girls dream of getting an exclusive item to look stylish and fashionable.

The fact is that the size of things made of such material is very easy to adjust. At the same time, its integrity is not violated. Judging by the design ideas, eco-fur coats made from various types of fibers, of any color and style, are in fashion. Eco-fur is often used to trim a leather jacket or decorate the hood, sleeves or collar. Especially popular are various leather jackets with set-in pieces of eco-fur.

    Reviews

    • I bought a fur coat made from eco-mink for myself, buying it for the low price and relative naturalness. After wearing it for just one season, the fur around the wrist began to fray and the material began to show through. The fur coat can no longer be repaired. It goes without saying that I won’t wear a fur coat with a bald spot on it. Therefore, I don’t think that such a purchase was profitable. Alla Petrovna.
    • In my case there is a different problem. After several months of wearing my new fur coat, very noticeable stripes began to appear in the place where the folds of the sleeves were folded, which could not be hidden by any combing. The fur coat is irreparably damaged. I regret wasting money. Irinka.
    • I bought myself an eco-friendly mink fur coat and have been wearing it for 4 winters. There are no bends or scuffs anywhere. I am very happy with this purchase and recommend it to everyone I know. Valeria.
    • I advise those who are planning to buy such a fur coat to carefully choose the manufacturer. I bought this coat for myself twice. I would compare the one I bought first to a painted cardboard dish: it looks chic, but cannot be used. The second fur coat has served me well for the 4th season, I wash it every spring in the washing machine. Evgenia Ivanovna.
    • These new fur coats are a real find for fashionista students like me and my friends. A large number of different models and bright colors. I think this is a good opportunity to look chic and impressive. I have eco-fur mink and 2 other fur coats in my wardrobe, which I am very pleased with. Natka.
    • One drawback that I can note about the eco fur coat is that it doesn’t warm up at all. I bought a fur coat just before the New Year. And I liked myself so much in it that I decided to go home straight in this fur coat. By the time I got home I was very cold and my mood was ruined. I reassured myself that it was simply quite cold outside at that time, since there had been severe frosts before that. But it so happened that I almost didn’t wear it until the end of winter. Now this wonderful fur coat has been stored in my closet for the 2nd season, it just takes up space. Irishka King.

    Editorial opinion

    • There is no need to kill animals to produce fur coats. This is very important to some people.
    • Looks great.
    • Such a fur coat is not suitable for the Siberian cold, but in regions where the winter is warm it is an excellent option.
    • Low cost.
    • A good alternative for those who are used to following fashion trends but are tight on finances. After all, it’s not a cheap pleasure to annually update your wardrobe made of natural fur in order to meet fashion trends.
    • Not a lot of weight.
    • It is not susceptible to attacks from moths, although after some time the pile shrinks, crumbles and can roll off.
    • When purchasing, you need to prepare yourself for the fact that this fur coat will last only a few years.

    Differences from fur

Fur is a well-known basis for fur coats, and one of the most popular. Eco-fur has not yet completely surpassed it in its characteristics. Knowing what eco-fur is, a person can assume that fur performs better in wet conditions. But many modern environmental models can give even such dense material a head start.

Eco-fur is not able to warm up the body as much as fur can. No matter how hard a person tries, natural fibers are time-tested and warm better. Fur also looks different - it is even softer and smoother than eco-fur.

Perhaps in the near future this gap between ecological and real fur will be filled, and the first will be able to easily replace natural products. This is necessary not only for reasons of economy, but also to save the lives of poor animals that are subjected to torture.

    Natural and artificial mink. Differences.

The easiest way would be to say that natural mink fur differs from artificial fur, “like heaven from earth.” But modern technologies and advances in the chemical industry make it possible to achieve a high degree of similarity between materials, at least at first glance. So let's take a closer look.

    • Weight. Comparing natural and artificial fur coats of approximately the same size in weight, you will find that an artificial fur coat is much heavier.
    • Luster and characteristics of fur. The noble silky shine of mink fur cannot be faked. This is especially noticeable in comparison. Iron your fur coat against the lint: faux fur will not return to its original state as quickly as natural fur.
    • Underfur and underbelly. Extend the fur to the base. Natural mink is famous for its thick, dense underfur, which perfectly protects heat. Faux fur has no underfur. The basis of the faux fur is fabric or thick knitwear, and this is clearly visible.

In wear and operation, the differences are even more significant:

    • An artificial fur coat loses its original appearance after 3-4 seasons, while a natural mink will last more than 10 winters, maintaining its beauty.
    • Artificial mink will not warm you in frost below 10-15 degrees. As we said, this fur does not have a warm underfur, while a natural mink coat will protect you in the most severe frosts, even in the Far North.

    Disadvantages of natural material

Despite many positive features, fur also has negative ones. First of all, this is the difficulty of extraction, since to create a beautiful fur coat you need fur from an animal that was fed correctly and looked after its fur. If you do not observe such points, the fur will be faded, sparse and ugly.

Natural fibers are known to be short-lived not only because of hair loss, but also because of moths, which eat it away with great pleasure. The moth lays its larvae on the material, and they feed on it as they grow. It is for this reason that the product is very difficult to clean and process correctly. This requires knowledge of the optimal temperature for storage, as well as the availability of special means.

Over the course of many centuries, the cost of fur has not decreased, so you will have to spend a lot.

    Advantages of eco-models

    The main advantages include:

  • Many animals survive, so it is quite possible to avoid the extinction of some groups.
  • There is also less harm to the environment overall. It’s not for nothing that such fur is called ecological.
  • Children should not accept the fact that it is necessary to kill animals. Thanks to this, they become less aggressive towards nature and everything that exists.
  • More loyal price.
  • Eco-fur is not difficult to care for; some types can even be washed.
  • Moths do not eat the material, so there is no need for additional processing.
  • The ecological type is much easier to produce than the natural one.
  • A variety of sizes, and the product is created from single pieces.
  • Has less weight compared to real fur.
  • It looks no less luxurious; many models are many times more beautiful than natural fur coats.
  • Allows you to always look stylish and fashionable at a low cost.
