Top 10 most expensive fur coats
We present the Top 10 most expensive furs in the world. The price of such fur coats reaches tens of thousands of dollars. So…
10th place – beaver coat
Beaver fur coats have firmly gained popularity in the Russian market. All this is due to the characteristics of this fur. The beaver is distinguished by its thick, wear-resistant and high-quality fur . It is very soft to the touch, but if you run your hand against the growth, you feel a slight sting.
The shorn beaver is especially popular. Thanks to the dense undercoat, such a fur coat is warm even at a temperature of -35 degrees Celsius; it is because of this characteristic that beaver products occupy a leading position in the northern cities of the country. In addition, beaver is valued for its high wear resistance. The average service life of a fur coat is 15 years.
The price range for beaver fur fluctuates around 70–80 thousand rubles. A shortened model without a hood can be purchased for 25–30 thousand. The price for long models reaches 100,000 rubles. A beaver fur coat with a hood trimmed with sable or arctic fox fur costs approximately 130–140 thousand rubles.
9th place – silver fox
One of the most beautiful and fluffy furs is the silver fox. The length of the pile reaches 7–8 cm. A distinctive feature of a black-brown fox fur coat is its chic color, which has brown, brown and gray shades with longitudinal black stripes . Young fashionistas choose dark blue and emerald colors. This fur is resistant to any temperature and is not afraid of moisture and strong winds. It is shiny and has a thick undercoat. Thanks to the length of the pile, creases on the product are practically invisible, which allows you to wear a fur coat for many years, and at the same time it will look like new. The following models are popular this season:
- knitted fur coat;
- transverse;
- with hood;
- from plucked silver fox;
- autolady model.
The price of a short fur coat made of silver fox is 50–60 thousand rubles, a long fur coat will cost you about 110–120 thousand, products with a hood and floor length reach a price of 160,000 rubles.
8th place – ermine
Ermine or, as it is also called, royal fur is considered one of the softest furs.
However, an ermine or sheepskin coat is only suitable for traveling by car or going out. This is due to the fact that ermine has a thin skin that is not able to warm you in frosty or windy weather. In addition, fur does not have high wear resistance. If you wear it every day, it will last you no more than two seasons. Why then is this fur valued? In beauty it is not inferior to mink. Ermine coats are very light, they are slimming and have beautiful colors . White, blue, walnut, beige, and gray shades are popular among fashionistas. Prices for ermine fur coats start at 100,000 rubles; this is the price for which you can purchase a shortened model without a hood. The price for long fur coats ranges from 170–200 thousand rubles.
7th place – Arctic fox fur
The Arctic fox is an Arctic fox that lives above the Arctic Circle. Its fur is extremely valuable. Particularly popular is sheared fur of a natural shade. Blue, white, silver and voile colors are in fashion. Such a fur coat will keep you warm in frosty weather, but it tolerates moisture extremely poorly. In addition, the arctic fox needs to be carefully looked after: combed with a special brush, stored in a canvas bag, protected from voracious moths .
Arctic fox fur wears out quickly, so a leather belt is not suitable for it. The length of the pile reaches 7–8 cm in length, so the arctic fox fur coat adds additional volume to the figure. The cost of an arctic fox fur coat is 80–100 thousand rubles. An extended model of a rare color will cost you approximately 130–150 thousand.
6th place – marten
Marten fur coats are premium products. This fur looks simply gorgeous. Despite the fact that it is lightweight, it will warm you even at temperatures down to -30 degrees. The marten is distinguished by its shiny long hair and rich iridescent hue .
Smoky, chestnut and nut shades are in fashion. The fur of the animal is very durable and has increased wear and tear. With careful use, the fur coat will serve its owner for at least six to seven seasons. Only a wealthy woman can afford to buy a long, luxurious marten fur coat, since the price of the products starts from 140,000 rubles. A well-tailored fur coat of a rare color will cost you 200–240 thousand rubles. A short fur coat is a little cheaper; its price range ranges from 140–170 thousand rubles.
5th place – mink coat
The most popular fur on the Russian market is mink. A regular, classic cut mink coat will no longer surprise anyone, so fur salons offer original options:
- plucked fur;
- knitted mink;
- Coco Chanel style;
- bat;
- changeling;
- jellyfish;
- butterfly.
Mink has established itself as a warm, temperature-resistant fur. Even a lightweight model can easily withstand and warm at temperatures down to -25 degrees. Unfortunately, mink is susceptible to abrasion, so it is not recommended to wear such a fur coat with a leather belt . The palette of shades is quite diverse. Fur salons offer to purchase mink coats in classic black, brown, walnut, blue and white shades. Young people choose brighter colors: purple, emerald, sand. Mink vests are at the peak of popularity.
The price of a short fur coat without a hood is 40–50 thousand rubles. A short fur coat with a hood will cost 15–20 thousand. A long, chic, floor-length fur coat is estimated at approximately 200,000 rubles. The most expensive shades are “stardust”, “marble”, “cinnamon”, their price varies in the range of 250-300 thousand rubles.
4th place – chinchilla
Chinchilla fur coats appeared on the Russian market a little over 20 years ago and immediately gained popularity. The texture of the fur is very soft and pleasant to the touch. A fairly thick undercoat warms at a temperature of -20 degrees. The main feature of chinchillas is the complete absence of odor, so this fur is hypoallergenic .
The color range of chinchilla products is not particularly diverse. Salons offer to purchase a fur coat in dark gray, ash, brown-beige or cream shades. The peculiarity of the color is a quilted texture with a gradient transition. Unfortunately, a chinchilla fur coat is a short-lived product, since the pile falls off and is quickly wiped off, so it is only suitable for special occasions. The cost of a chinchilla fur coat is 230–250 thousand, a long model without a hood will cost 300–350 thousand, and a chic chinchilla fur coat with a hood trimmed with arctic fox fur will cost 400,000 rubles.
3rd place – trot
The top three in terms of cost are lynx fur. This is the most recognizable fur due to its beautiful color. It is quite dense, but at the same time soft, warms well in winter. The most valuable and beautiful is the abdominal part of the lynx fur, as it has a special texture. Lynx fur is almost never dyed, which increases its cost significantly. The wear resistance of this fur is very high; with good care, the fur coat will last you at least 5 seasons. Like most furs, lynx does not tolerate moisture, so it is better to wear it in dry frosty weather .
A long lynx coat is one of the most expensive on the market, its cost reaches half a million rubles. The cheapest are lynx jackets and boleros; their cost ranges from 150–190 thousand rubles.
2nd place – sable
Sable fur is one of the three most expensive furs in the world. It is called the “king of fur” or “soft gold”. And, for good reason, the price of this fur reaches 500–600 thousand rubles. A fur coat sewn from pieces will cost you 350–380 thousand, and a short fur coat about 270 thousand. Why such a high price? The sable fur coat has a thick, soft and silky pile that is naturally shiny . High wear resistance allows you to wear the product for up to 12 seasons. The following models of sable fur coats are considered the most popular:
- with a cross cut;
- with hood;
- changeling;
- car lady;
- long classic.
The most expensive fur is the Barguzin sable, which is black in color with a bluish tint. This is exactly the fur coat that Karl Lagerfeld presented at the fashion show. Its cost was estimated at 1 million euros.
1st place – vicuna fur
The leader in the ranking of the most expensive fur in the world is vicuna fur. The Vicuna is a breed of Peruvian llama that is prohibited from being caught and taken out of the country.
The cost of fur coats made from vicuña fur reaches 1,000,000 rubles, so more often manufacturers offer jackets and coats made from the wool of this rare animal at a price of 400–500 thousand rubles.
Vicuna fur is very thin and short. In addition, it has a rare shade of cinnamon, and is never dyed, only sold in its natural color . Only a few companies in the world work with vicuña fur, the most famous of which are Loro Piana and Falke.
Ermine
When it comes to imperial clothes, the first thing that comes to mind for many is the snow-white ermine mantle with black “commas.”
Indeed, among furs, the ermine stands at the top of the hierarchical ladder. Its perfectly white color and extraordinary softness made it so valuable. Although it is not particularly wear-resistant, it is “going out” fur. Thinking about purchasing an ermine coat? Our atelier will be happy to help you sew a cape, cape, collar or jacket from the fur of this animal.
The stoat is a small predator from the mustelidae family. Long body and neck, short legs, the animal is small and nimble. In winter and summer it changes color, which also depends on the geography of the ermine’s habitat, so in total there are about 26 of its subspecies.
The color of the ermine is so-called protective: in winter it is snow-white (in those areas where snow lies for more than 40 days a year), in summer it becomes brownish on top, on the back, and whitish-yellow below, near the belly. But the black tip of the tail remains so regardless of the season, and of all mustelids, only the stoat has this feature. There is a version that this is how he deceives birds of prey, which, seeing a black spot, attack him, but the animal manages to escape and receives a signal that he needs to be careful.
The ermine lives in the north of the Eurasian and North American continents, although it is also found in Asia, right down to the deserts of Afghanistan, as well as in China and Japan. In our country, it is found in Karelia, Siberia, and on the islands of the Arctic Ocean. Favorite places to live are dark, dense forests, windfalls, abandoned clearings, and floodplains. The denser the forest, the more the ermine likes it. Its food: small rodents, lizards and frogs, and its ability to climb trees makes it possible to feed on bird eggs and chicks. Despite its small size, an ermine can defeat a partridge or hazel grouse, and if it is really hungry, it catches fish.
It is prohibited to hunt ermine in the wild; this species is listed in the Red Book. Keeping them as pets is not possible, and simply impossible. They do not tolerate captivity well and die quickly. In nature, the lifespan of an ermine is up to seven years.
The uniqueness of ermine fur
This is a winter type of fur with shiny, thick and velvety pile up to two centimeters long. In winter, the ermine becomes completely white (except for the tip of the tail), in summer its color is brown, in autumn with a grayish tint. The skin is 15-40 cm long, the tail is from 5 to 15. The fur does not belong to the wearable category, its wear resistance is only 25% (the same as that of a squirrel and a rabbit).
Despite the fact that ermine fur cannot be worn for a long time, it is highly valued for its natural whiteness, softness and elegance. It is so soft that it was made a symbol of one of the five human senses - touch. Of course, there is no place for an ermine coat on the bus or subway on the way to work. It is usually sewn on a thin lining (since the fur itself is quite thin), insulation is not used, so in severe frosts such a fur coat will not warm you. Rather, such a product is worn during public appearances to emphasize the status, wealth and social position of its owner.
Ermine fur is a symbol of royal power and honor.
Since ancient times, kings, kings, and princes of various states have used ermine fur to trim clothes, robes, and sometimes it was even used to decorate family coats of arms. Graphically it looked like a white field with black “commas”, and in the ceremonial version fur itself was used.
The ermine was a rare animal and difficult to catch, so people endowed it with extraordinary qualities. For example, the ermine was a symbol of purity, as evidenced by its snow-white fur coat: it would never stain itself with dirt or violate the principles of cleanliness. Noble families, using the image of an ermine on their coats of arms, often wrote on them something like “it is better to die than to tarnish your honor.” A legend has survived to this day about how the Duke of Brittany, Alan Barberot, was fleeing from the Normans and his horse led him to a dirty muddy river. The ermine also ran away from the galloping horses and, caught by surprise at the very water, the ermine turned to face the deadly hooves, but did not jump into the dirty water. The Duke was inspired by the courage of the little predator and shouted to his subjects: “We will accept death, but not shame!” and turned to face the enemy.
The image of the ermine itself and its fur is often found in works of art, for example, Leonardo da Vinci has this animal in the arms of Cecilia Gallerani. Many holy virgins are depicted wearing ermine capes.
Ermine fur in the clothes of the nobility is not just a tribute to fashion. This is again a symbol of the spiritual and intellectual purity of thoughts of all who belong to royal blood. In 1937, when George was crowned, more than 50,000 skins were brought from Canada! Modern royalty does not wear ermine fur, but on special occasions they still wear luxurious robes lined with white fur with black speckles.
The legend of the ermine and its coat
The beautiful and soft fur of the ermine is also reflected in folklore. People have created a legend about how this little animal acquired its snow-white coat and black tip of its tail.
Once upon a time, the ermine lived in the forest and wore brown fur. One winter he saw a hunting hut and wanted to bask on the chimney. Having made himself comfortable, the ermine fell asleep, but could not resist his sleep, fell into the chimney and fell straight into a cauldron of boiling water. The hunter quickly caught the animal, but all its fur came out from the boiling water, so the ermine was allowed to stay in the hut in such frost.
Days passed, the ermine recovered, began to live happily, well-fed, and from such a comfortable life he became covered with white, white fur. And in the absence of the hunter, he got into the habit of climbing into the pantry and eating oil, which made his fur coat shiny and smooth. The owner noticed that someone was stealing butter and decided to waylay the thief. With a poker in his hands, he hid near the door to the pantry, and was extremely surprised and disappointed to see who was stealing the oil, the one he had sheltered and warmed - an ermine! In pursuit of the nimble rodent, the hunter waved a smoky poker, but failed to catch it; he caught it only by the very tip of its tail. The ermine was like that and ran back into the forest. Since then, he has been wearing a white fur coat with a black mark, the sign of an ungrateful thief.
