What happened: after the purchase, the fur coat was recut in an artisanal way. At the same time, it was sewn crookedly, small pieces of skins were sewn together by hand and extremely carelessly, some of them were sewn to a rag without having a proper connection with each other. The sleeves had torn edges, without proper processing. The customer's fur coat did not sit straight, it bulged in different places, creating folds. What they did: they completely altered the fur coat, sewing the pieces together again using a furrier's machine. Replaced the lining. The adhesive weak points were duplicated. Practical tips for altering a fur coat
Do you want to alter a long fur coat ? First you need to tear it apart into separate elements and clean the fur. Then pin each piece to the table with needles and smooth it out. If there are torn areas, patch everything up and sew it up, remove areas with damaged fur. If the top of the product remains in good condition, then you just need to cut off the bottom exactly along the previously drawn line.
If an old fur coat is completely unsuitable for updating, then new parts are cut out using patterns. Tracing paper is applied to the aligned pieces of fur, from which new parts are cut. They are then sewn together according to the pattern of the new model.

For independent work you will need: first, tear apart the old items, check the condition of the lining and fur. If there are holes, they are sewn up, and pieces with abrasions are removed. Next, there are two options for how to create a mixed fur coat:
- Leather strips are prepared, that is, the old jacket is cut into strips. Then the fur product suffers the same fate. At the last stage, all strips of fur and leather are stitched horizontally, alternating.
- Leather can be used as separate inserts. The most convenient places for this are at the waist, sleeves, make leather pockets or shelves.
How much it costs to alter a fur coat depends on the complexity of the model, the type of fur and the studio itself. But when altering a fur product, the role is played not so much by the price as by the experience of the craftsmen. What happened: the fur was worn down to leather on the cuffs, pockets, hem, and the inside of the hood. The fur in the armpit area was torn, and the owner of the fur coat sewed on faux fur patches by hand. The lining is frayed. The side was worn out, plus a homemade insert on the left side, which the owner of the fur coat wanted to keep. What they did: they repaired the tears at the armholes with fur from the remains of the cuffs. The cuffs were made entirely of leather. The inner lining and insert were treated with leather. Among the most interesting modification options:

An old fur coat can be turned into a stylish one by changing only the design of the sleeves, especially since abrasions are most often observed on them. To do this, perform a number of actions:

You need to connect the fur pieces with a special seam, fastening them with tape and gluing the fabric to give it shape. When lengthening a mouton fur coat, it is worth remembering that the pieces of fabric need to be overlocked and sewn with a zigzag. It is not necessary to glue the fur coat, and it is recommended to cover the seams with satin ribbon.
How to make a fur vest with your own hands
The easiest way to sew a fur vest from a fur coat. It can be either all-fur or combined with inserts made of leather or other fur. It is necessary to flog the lining and sleeves of the fur coat. Based on the measurements taken, a pattern drawing is made on the wrong side. If the armhole width is insufficient, it is enlarged and processed. The seams are basted, fitting is performed, the product is adjusted and then sewn. Next, cut out the lining and sew it in. The sleeves and neck of the vest can be decorated with other fur, leather, or knitwear. Options with a collar, hood, or edging along the edge of the product look good.
Bolero or cape
From an old medium-sized fur coat you can make a couple of stylish things - a bolero and a cape. For the first item you will need a very small part of the fur coat, which is the least worn. The bolero can be called a very short vest; it is sewn both with and without sleeves. When cutting the product, you need to remember the direction of the pile. From the remaining part of the fur coat you can sew a cape, which is a rectangle with or without slits for the arms.
Mink
You can remake a mink coat at home. This is not difficult if the product is made from whole skins. The task becomes more difficult when the mink coat consists of small pieces. A few ideas may come in handy for the remodel:
- change the cut by shortening it and making a hood with interesting ties;
- make a skirt out of it;
- decorate a mink model with lace perforated leather or suede;
- use stones or metal fittings for decoration;
- lengthen the mink coat with an insert at the waist;
- remake it into a “car lady” fur coat.

What happened: a mink coat torn to shreds was brought to the studio. What they did: our craftsmen disassembled what was left of the product into pieces, assembled all the parts together, straightened them, and installed a lining.
Fur carpet
To create it you will need several old fur coats; for example, you can use your own and your child’s. The size of the carpet will depend on the amount of sewing material collected; you need to identify areas of fur coats without defects on the reverse side.
The process of creating a warm fur rug will look like this:
- The fur coat is laid out on the floor, and all unnecessary and damaged parts are removed from it using a scalpel or a utility knife.
- Squares or strips of equal length and width are cut from the cut suitable material. The pattern of these parts should be carried out along the seam so as not to damage the structure of the fur.
- The prepared fur pieces are turned over with their front side on the floor and laid out according to the parameters of the future product.
- All joining sides are sewn together with an overlock stitch, which is performed over the edge, while maintaining a uniform distance of 2-3 mm between stitches.
- To smooth the seams, they are sprayed with water and then left for 20 minutes.
Fur carpets are sewn square or rectangular, experienced craftsmen manage to make them oval, and some manage to create entire floor paintings from small fur parts.
Small pieces of fur can be used to create incredible pillows, handbags and backpacks. Such products will be especially useful, by the way, in winter. For them, you can use all the remaining trimmings after making other products.
Situations often arise when a mink or mouton coat loses its attractiveness due to its length. This problem occurs mainly with short sheepskin coats (“autolady” style). It would seem that a convenient and fashionable style allows you to move comfortably in a car. However, on the street and in everyday life it is a little cold in such a fur coat.

What happened: the customer complained that the top of the fur coat had hardened and began to tear, “creeping”. During the examination of the mink coat, it turned out that during wear, the top of the back was repeatedly wet due to snow getting under the hood, which led to a hardening of the inner layer, followed by rupture. What was done: we selected the fur and replaced the damaged areas.
Materials
Before you start altering, you should try on the product and evaluate it from the outside. The easiest way to lengthen fur coats with your own hands is to cross them. They have visible seams that are quick and easy to rip. It is easier to sew pieces of the same color and texture to the main fur. An example of the model is shown in the photo.
In addition to skins, you will need:
- lining fabric;
- needles;
- measuring tape, chalk;
- strong, but not thick threads, for example, from lavsan.
Scissors, a razor blade, and a steamer may also come in handy. All these tools should be used carefully so as not to damage the skin of the product.
If the elongated mink coat is wide enough, it can be sewn in. The resulting trimmings are used for lengthening. In this case, the flaps will not differ in color.
For reference! Difficulties often arise with skins that are combined with each other. Often the sleeves and the length of the product are lengthened at the same time. Often you have to completely repaint a long fur coat if the shades do not match.
Restoring a mink fur coat
What happened: a torn mink coat was brought to the studio. What they did: our craftsmen took apart what was left of the fur coat into pieces, assembled all the parts together, and installed the lining.
Clean to shine
If your mink coat has become dull or lost its shine, these imperfections can be easily eliminated with vinegar and nut oil. To begin, carefully comb the fur with a fine comb, then go over the fur with a sponge moistened with a solution of vinegar and water in equal proportions.
The lost shine of a fur coat can be restored at home using walnut oil. Wrap sufficiently crushed walnut kernels in gauze and walk them through the pile. Thanks to these manipulations, the fur will acquire a vibrant shine and lost luster. A light mink coat can be cleaned using potato starch: spread the clothes on the floor, sprinkle generously with starch and thoroughly, but very carefully rub the powder into the product, paying special attention to the most “greasy” places: collar, pockets, sleeve cuffs. Then just shake out the starch thoroughly (video).
Recut an old mouton fur coat
What it was: a long barn fur coat with damage. The sides, sleeves, and collar were worn out. What was done: completely recut the fur coat. We made a jacket with a stand.

What it was: a worn out fur coat with moth damage. What was done: a complete restoration was carried out, removing worn areas and then replacing them with new fur.
How to do everything yourself?
How to make a small mink coat larger with your own hands? The whole process will look like this:
- completely open the product;
- prepare paper patterns;
- lay out the patterns on a flat surface at a distance that corresponds to the new sizes;
- connect individual parts of the patterns together with strips of paper;
- sew a new fur coat using existing patterns.
If the width of the fur product increases, the total number must be divided into 4 equal parts, the size of which must be added to the front, back and sides. For example, if the width of a mink coat that has become small should increase in chest volume and waistline by 10 cm, then the front and back parts should be increased by 2.5 cm each, starting from the shoulder to the waist. In this case, it is necessary to adjust the seam lines.
Change your mink coats
What happened: the customer expressed a desire to reduce the volume of the fur coat and flare it out. What was done: the product was disassembled, the parts that needed to be cut were marked, they were cut out, the main cutting strips were sewn back together, and straightened. The flesh is moistened with a special composition and trimmed.
