Astrakhan fur is skins from unborn lambs, characterized by low, soft hair, tightly adjacent to the skin tissue, with a more or less clearly defined moiré pattern; the leather fabric is thin. The color of broadtail is: black and colored (gray, brown, white). Black skins, dyed black. Colored ones come in their natural form. Astrakhan fur is used for coats and jackets, but mainly as a trim for women's dresses, coats, and suits.

Karakul - skins of lambs aged 1-3 days . The skins of purebred astrakhan (Astrakhan sheep) have a silky, dense hair coat in the form of curls of the most varied shapes. The following main types of curls are distinguished: roller, bob, mane, ring, half-ring, corkscrew lass, polka dots.

Astrakhan skins of crossbred breeds are characterized by rough, glassy-shiny hair. The curls are less elastic, the tail is short, wide, covered, like the head, with smooth hair without curls.

According to the color of the hair, purebred and crossbred karakul can be black or colored: gray (light or dark gray), brown (light or dark brown), white and sur (the hair has a zonal color, for example, the base of the hair is black or brown in color, and the tips are light, silver or light golden).

Black karakul is sorted by variety (purebred into 30 varieties (brands) with a letter designation, crossbred into 22 varieties) and into groups depending on the defects. Colored astrakhan fur is sorted by hair color, by... sizes (large - over 8 dm2 and small - up to 8 dm2), varieties depending on silkiness, shine, shape of curls and their elasticity (purebred - 3 varieties, crossbred - 4) and by groups depending on defects.

Black and colored astrakhan fur is used on women's coats and jackets, collars and hats for men and women.

Smushka - skins of lambs of coarse-wool Ukrainian breeds of sheep aged 2-4 days. The hair of smushka skins is usually soft, slightly shiny or matte. The curls are similar in shape to astrakhan curls, but looser and braided. The hair on the head and neck is not curled.

The skins are sorted by size (small - up to 5 dm2, medium - 5-8 dm2 and large - over 8 dm2), into groups depending on defects, by grade (5 grades) depending on the quality of the hair and the nature of the curls and by color - into gray, dark gray and light gray, and painted ones - into black and brown. How is shorn fleece processed?

In order to answer the question of how much sheep wool costs, you need to take into account not only its variety, but also the quality of processing. Many people mistakenly believe that it is enough to wash the fleece, and it will be in demand on the market.

In order for the fleece to be processed efficiently, it is necessary to purchase equipment for processing sheep wool (mini-mill), which includes several devices. These include devices for:

  • cleaning from burrs;
  • eliminating tangles and debris;
  • washing;
  • drying.

After the shorn wool has been fully processed, it goes into a special tank for purified raw materials.

Processing wool at home without the use of special devices will not be of such high quality, and it will also take much more time to complete this work.

Domestication of lambs

Greetings to all curious people. Once again I have a wonderful Thursday! I hope yours is as pleasant as it is) Lots of photos and a lot of text about Brian. And this is a new “series” of stories about my residents. The last one was about Michael - In it you already saw our unboxing beast. But I wanted to introduce him to you more closely) I love SD\70+ format dolls for many reasons, but mainly because I can do a lot for them with my own hands. Sewing clothes and being able to choose fabrics of the right size/yarn thickness and not going blind in the process of sewing/knitting)) Little things certainly touch me, all these mini houses with gardens and tiled roofs, tiny dolls the size of a palm or smaller. It’s great, but I like to play with “big” dolls. Because I am often overcome by an inevitable desire to do something for them. It was during one of these impulses that Brian moved in with us.

In general, I needed dogs, a whole flock of different lost dogs for Will. And I spent a long time looking for options on how to get them. I like felted animals and many artists create very realistic and wonderful works. I have been looking for a long time for a master who would agree to make me dogs 7-10 in size for my dolls. And I didn’t find him. This is a long and not interesting story about how difficult it is to find a craftsman to do custom work without spending a million. I think many have in one way or another encountered a similar phenomenon in their hobbies and in life, this is a sore subject with empty searches, refusals, unaffordable prices, unrealistic waiting periods, and I won’t even continue further in order to dispense with salt in the wounds. So, I decided to mat the dogs myself. Bad idea, but how could we live without it? As a result, two bags of wool, a bunch of broken needles and spent nerves. And most importantly, fingers! God my fingers!!! All the felters are just heroes to me after these attempts! Thanks to my favorite site for the fact that here you can place not only dolls, but also a lot of doll things in needy hands. I added the wool one way or another)) Minus two bags from my workshop) But I still needed the dogs and I decided to sew them from fur. Sewing is still a more familiar activity for me, and I have already worked with faux fur before. But bad luck, a dog, and if it is also realistic and of a certain breed, a difficult object to recreate for a beginner. I wanted to start with something more feasible. I chose lamb simply because of the availability of suitable materials. I needed him for one thing! photo. I wanted to shoot my Will based on the art, with a lamb in his arms. I decided that whatever the animal would turn out to be in the end, I would take a photo and practice in front of the dogs. Until this moment, I did not know how frame toys are created using mixed media and started work from scratch, from the beginner stage. On YAM I found instructions for making such a toy and just started trying it. I took photos of the process just for myself, so there are not many of them and this is not a master class.

To say it was fun is an understatement. Sometimes I just couldn’t move on until I laughed at him enough. It turned out to be a very funny and emotional process))

I did it for several days without interruption. I was literally on a binge, I couldn’t go to sleep until I finished some stage of the work. Two scissors fell victim to his haircuts.

Only then did I decide to buy professional hair cutting scissors. They work great and are worth the money, by the way.

I didn’t sleep at night - that’s why I almost “dressed” him)) Handsome))

As a result, it turned out to be larger than necessary because I have a good eye)) For that sea of charm.

I wanted a mobile animal, at least a little, that’s why there’s a wire frame inside. The manufacturing technology is quite simple in technical terms, but very exciting in the process. I highly recommend it to anyone who wanted to suffer something like this but didn’t dare! Surprised))

Gloomy))

Photo “on the hands” - fitting. Where were my eyes when I fought him?! This is no longer a lamb, but a completely grown-up individual, very well-fed ((

But we liked him just the way he was. Brian loves being photographed and really gets into every frame. He even has his own “outdoor” photo shoot) with the owner. He loves to sit in his arms, but is self-willed by nature.

Of course, we also took the photo for which I decided to sew it. Despite his well-fed appearance ((

In general, for now, the point is, my lamb has grown up and no longer fits in my arms))) Photo “behind the scenes” for those who love process machines (I’m one of those people, it’s very interesting to look at the inside out)

And then, on the Internet, we came across an article about a domestic sheep that considers itself a pet dog)) This is a very cute story)

And Brian immediately wanted the same collar and a sweater the color of boiled yolk. My mother had to knit for him, because he had been begging for something new for two months.

As befits the classics of the genre, he wore it for a couple of days and got tired of it. Brian turned from a “one-time project” into a permanent resident and member of my doll family by himself. There is a lot of it in my photos, attaching them all here is simply torturing the viewer, I won’t. But not so long ago he made a friend, and I’ll tell you about this in another series)

I thank everyone who stuck it out until the end) I will answer any questions for those who want to start making toys on their own; I didn’t write in the topic since there is already a sea of text) I’m glad to see all my friends and guests)

How it is recycled

Processing of fleece that has been cleaned using various devices or has been cleaned manually can be of two types:

  1. Wallow.
  2. Making woolen threads.

Felting today is considered a fairly simple way to make products compared to the production of threads. With its help, you can make a lot of products, including clothes, hats, toys, accessories, bags and much more. There is no need for expensive special equipment during the felting process, and you can use any raw material, even wool and fur from a special short-haired breed of sheep.

Felting can be wet or dry, and different methods involve the use of different tools and materials.

For dry you will need special needles with serifs, and for wet you will need hot water and soap. This work is done manually; as a rule, craftsmen work at home. However, the production of felted products can be put on stream.

To produce woolen threads, you will need to purchase special spinning machines, the cost of which is quite high. Among other things, it will also be necessary to expand the staff. You should choose this option for processing raw materials based on the wool productivity of the animals, how large the herd is and how much money the farmer has. Often purchasing a spinning machine does not make sense, since it will take too long to pay for itself.
