The 1967 World Exhibition was originally supposed to be held in Moscow on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution under the motto “Progress and Peace.” All states, as well as international organizations, regardless of their government system and social system, were to be invited to participate in the World Exhibition in order to demonstrate the successes they had achieved in the fields of economics, science, technology and culture. But due to financial problems, the USSR refused to host an expensive event, so the International Exhibitions Bureau decided to hold Expo 67 in Canada, timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Dominion of Canada by decree of Queen Victoria and the 325th anniversary of the founding of the city of Montreal.
The Expo 67 territory occupied 408 hectares and was located on two islands and a port pier, symbolizing its country, washed by three oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic. The "Exhibition Islands" were located on St. Lawrence Island, opposite the city of Montreal. The main part of the exhibition is the island of St. Helena. A little further downstream was the reclaimed Notre Dame Island, where the USSR pavilion was located, as well as the McKay pier, specially enlarged for the exhibition. The main motto of the exhibition was the title of the book by the famous French writer and pilot Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, “Land of Men.”
Over 70 countries took part in the exhibition, the pavilions for which were designed by the best architects and artists. The Soviet pavilion in Montreal stood opposite the US pavilion, built by the famous architect and engineer Richard Fuller in the form of a huge sphere with a diameter of 76 meters from translucent plastic, aluminum and steel. According to estimates from the Canadian press, the USSR pavilion cost $15–20 million in prices of that time.
The Canadians called it the “flying roof.” When it got dark, the building flashed with bright light and became even more airy, directed into the sky. An analogy arose: the first country of the Soviets and Space, the exploration of which was described in our exposition. The Canadian newspaper Montreal Star wrote that the Soviet pavilion was the best.
It had four tiers connected by eight escalators. The maximum height is 42 m, the exhibition area is 13 thousand square meters. m. The curved, elastic roof of the pavilion seemed to rest, like the curved hypotenuse of a huge triangle, on two legs resting on one point. The hinged triangle was easily visible through the walls, surprising visitors to the exhibition. Through the transparent pediment of the building, the scaly “Lentil” of a space attraction looked like a heart, it was located in the center of a multi-story structure, illuminated by flashes of light.
