What happened to the fur again?
On November 4, the Danish government decided to destroy all minks on fur farms (15–17 million individuals) and ban fur production. It turned out that the animals carry a mutated strain of coronavirus. However, on November 12, the Danes reconsidered their decision, and they will try to save the remaining minks.

The issue of safety and ethicality of fur production will not go away now, and, most likely, in the coming years we will see significant changes in the natural fur and leather industry.
The largest Danish fur auction, Kopenhagen Fur, has already announced its closure due to the situation with minks.
This company accounts for 60% of the global fur market. It will be liquidated within 2–3 years.

Fur values
The anti-fur movement was pioneered by Calvin Klein, who stopped using the material back in the 1990s. In the same decade
the famous photo project for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) in which Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and other supermodels posed naked. It read: I'd rather go naked than wear fur (“I’d rather go naked than in fur”). At that time, this was not a very popular point of view, and was shared only by animal rights activists who regularly interrupted shows at Fashion Week with pickets. Anti-fur fashion entered a new phase in 2001: Stella McCartney had just created her brand and declared that natural fur was not part of its DNA. But the real boom in abandoning this material for brands has occurred recently. Over the past few years, major brands including Prada, Burberry, Gucci, Chanel, Versace, Armani and DKNY have gone fur-free. The mass market followed them: Zara, H&M and Massimo Dutti also abandoned natural fur coats in favor of eco-trends. Yoox Net-a-Porter group will stop selling fur in 2021, and last year department stores Bloomingdale's and Macy's announced plans to do the same. These small victories prompted Peta to solemnly declare that the fur-free movement had won and wind down its anti-fur campaign.

Fur factories and manufacturers of furs and fur products
Soft junk, soft gold, fluffy gold - these are all the names of furs and products made from animal fur, which from the fifteenth century to the end of the 80s of the twentieth were a source of income, a subject of trade and pride of Russia. In various historical periods, fur products occupied 2...4 place in importance in the category of export goods. The planned economy of the Soviet period ensured the explosive development of the fur industry. A scientific (VNIIMP) and production base has been created in the Union Republics, taking into account raw material specialization. During the period from 1929 to 1940, fur production volumes, including sheepskin processing, increased 11 times. By the beginning of the 90s, more than 30 large factories for the production of fur and fur products, more than 3,000 fur farms and a large number of procurement enterprises and fishing cooperatives operated on the territory of the USSR.
Production of fur and fur coats
The production of fur and fur coats, due to the specificity of the components, is divided into the production of semi-finished products (dressed individual skins - stockings, layers or sewn fur plates) and finished products (fur coats, collars, hats, etc.)
Full production cycle for the production of semi-finished products:
Dressing is a complex of technological processes (fermentation, tanning, dyeing, mechanical processing) to impart certain properties to the leather (elasticity, strength, thickness, etc.) while maintaining or improving the consumer qualities of the fur itself. Dressing is a “dirty” industry from an environmental point of view, due to the use of chemical components (surfactants, chromium and sulfur compounds), which are unsafe and cannot be fully recycled.
Furrier and sewing work is a series of sequential operations:
- sorting of dressed skins by fur quality, leather dressing, skin size, ridges and many other indicators;
- selection of skins based on uniformity of quality, color and texture of fur;
- cutting according to templates and stitching plates of a certain size.
Furrier and sewing work is difficult to mechanize and automate processes. The share of manual labor and dependence on the qualifications of workers is very high.
Sewing a fur product - assembling a fur product from plates in accordance with the model or purpose (collar, hat).
Elements of the full production cycle of fur products vary significantly in technological methods and types of equipment used. Therefore, combining the entire production cycle within the structure of one enterprise (company) is possible for a limited number of industrialists who have a stable raw material base and sales market. Currently, enterprises are developing along the path of narrow specialization.
Products
Features of the technology for the production of fur products determine the type of commercial product. In the structure of exports of modern Russia, almost all commercial products (95...97%) of the fur industry represent:
- Tanned whole skins (stockings, layers or individual parts) of valuable animals.
- Dressed elements of the skin, sewn into plates of a certain format.
- Untreated (preserved) whole skins and layers.
The domestic market is estimated at 120...150 billion rubles, which 80% (excluding counterfeit and smuggling) is satisfied by imports from China, Turkey, Italy, Greece (according to the NGO Furriers' Union).
Product types:
- Winter outerwear.
- Collars and hats.
- Finishing elements.
Industry Position
The introduction of market relations (rejection of a planned economy) threw the fur industry back to the level of the 40s. The number of enterprises with a complete cycle has decreased by 10 times. The raw material base has decreased sharply (from 3.5 thousand fur farming enterprises to 300). OJSC Roslegprom has a dozen enterprises with an annual turnover of 2...90 million rubles (LLC Belka - 90 million rubles; OJSC Russian Fur - 60; LLC KMF Marital - 43). Moreover, their load rarely reaches 60%. Since 2008, the increase in fur production volumes has not exceeded 4%.
The NGO "Union of Furriers" estimates the possible annual increase in the output of fur products until 2021 at 8...10%, provided:
- introduction of new fur dressing technologies;
- changes in legislation regarding the import of fur and counterfeit products;
- state support.
In general, the position of the industry is characterized by the share of the entire light industry in the Russian Federation's GDP, which is about 1%.

Faux fur is the most popular alternative to natural fur and is made from natural or synthetic textiles.

Daria Samkovich,
founder of the Russian brand I AM Studio:
“Natural fur is a story from the past, not only because of its environmental friendliness, but also because of trends. Fur is simply not in fashion now, as the emphasis is on convenience and comfort, sport and technology. Most fashion houses are adapting to this.
Even existing alternatives to real fur do not fit into the current realities of fashion. Therefore, products trimmed with natural or faux fur are giving way to down jackets with technological fillers that are comfortable and practical.”
What do animal rights activists think?
Aleksey Ivanov,
project coordinator of the organization "Open Cells":
“Regardless of the reasons, governments' decision to end the lives of animals raised for the fur industry will spare them the misery of constantly living in small cages.
The spread of coronavirus on fur farms had already happened before the situation in Denmark.
The first cases of transmission of the virus from animals to humans became known back in May. A mutated strain of coronavirus was also found on mink farms in Spain, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands and the USA.
In the Netherlands, the closure of the industry has accelerated by three years: the fur ban was originally due to come into force only in 2024.

Denmark is one of the largest exporters of mink fur. The animals are first killed with gas and then buried in the ground. But there are fears that this method will pollute groundwater. In addition to the virus, antibiotics that were used on farms can get into the water.

Considering the conditions animals face on factory farms, it is not surprising that new and dangerous pathogens are developing there. Viruses spread quickly, partly because production is so intensive. This causes chronic stress, which weakens the animals' immunity.
And overuse of antibiotics on farms increases another problem: bacteria are becoming resistant to the drugs.
Every year, 700 thousand people die from diseases that cannot now be cured with antibiotics. The UN estimates that if the situation does not change, by 2050 drug-resistant infections will claim 10 million lives a year.
From the point of view of animal protection, any restrictions benefit the animals, because they create additional difficulties for breeders. For example, fur farming was formally allowed in Germany, but new laws made production so complicated that it became unprofitable, and all farms were closed. The situation in 2021 could significantly accelerate fur bans in a number of countries.”
Where fur will soon be banned
Fur production is already illegal in many European countries (see map). A similar ban is being discussed in Ireland, Estonia, Poland, Bulgaria and Ukraine.

Prices for natural fur
If more than 15 million animals disappear from the market, fur will become more expensive, although demand will be low. The fact is that countries and companies are moving away from the fur industry, and the industry is already in crisis: demand was declining even before the coronavirus.
