The furrier craft of Greek masters has long been famous; in every corner of the world, women dream of purchasing a beautiful Greek fur coat of incomparable quality. The most famous fur manufacturers in Greece have been sewing beautiful products in their fur factories for decades, often in successful family businesses. Recently, the market has been flooded with huge quantities of cheaper Chinese fur coats, but they, of course, cannot compare with the Greek masterpieces. The best furs - blackglama mink, blue mink, imperial sable are used for expensive, exquisite fur coats by Greek masters; there are various models for the average budget, but all of them are made with impeccable quality and with love for their work.

Fur in Greece
Ah, the beautiful Aphrodite was clearly in a hurry to be born so early, otherwise she would have been dressed not in sea foam, but in luxurious mink fur! After all, today Greece is an internationally recognized leader in sales of fur products. And just because of the opportunity to buy an exclusive fluffy robe, it’s worth planning your vacation in this country of ancient gods and hot sun. Or go shopping as part of a fur coat tour.
Why Greece?
Indeed, it sounds paradoxical: one of the warmest countries and suddenly produces clothes for harsh winters. If you carefully read Greek myths, then you probably know the “pioneer” of the fur industry: remember how Hercules killed a lion and put on his skin? Of course, myth is not reality. In fact, the production of fur coats originated in Kastoria, and this place is not at all similar to the Greece we know about.
In Kastoria, which is remote from the sea coast and located in the north of the country, residents know firsthand about the cold: in winter it snows here, and the main body of water - Lake Orestiada - freezes and becomes covered with ice. It was in honor of the beavers that once inhabited the shores in abundance that the name of the city came about (“Castoras” - beaver). The furrier's craft originated here in the 13th century, and reached its dawn during the era of the Ottoman Empire: Turkish officers really loved to show off in clothes lined with expensive fur.
Gradually, furriers established trade relations with Europe and Tsarist Russia. And today fashionistas from all over the world are rushing to Greece to dress up for the cold season. The fur business is export-oriented, because the Greeks themselves do not need fur clothes.
Fur in Greece - the Greeks themselves do not run fur farms, but purchase raw materials at auctions in Europe and America, as well as in Russia.
Where are fur coats made in Greece?
Furriery in Greece is a family business, passed down from father to son. Many fur factories have built their reputation over centuries. Today in Greece there are about 1000 large and very tiny fur coat factories. Naturally, great demand forces the family business to expand, and several hundred people work in factories.
Basically, fur coats are sewn by hand. A popular sewing method is to unravel. To do this, each skin is cut into strips, thin, half a centimeter wide. Then they are sewn together, thereby achieving smooth lines and invisible transitions in the structure of the fur and its shades in the finished product. Such a fur coat looks like a king, but its cost is also not small. Cheaper are fur coats made from pieces, plates or tails of mink and nutria.
The patterns used to sew fur coats are often purchased from famous fashion designers, mainly Italian. And yes, many Italian fur coats are made in Kastoria!

Where in Greece can you buy the fur coat of your dreams?
There are a lot of factories and fur shops in Kastoria. Often the factory is located directly above the store, in the same building. A large store in Kastoria is “Edika” (Chloe district): there are more than a dozen rooms available to customers, where fur coats from large and small manufacturers are presented at prices ranging from the most affordable to exorbitant.
Kicknon Avenue is a whole street where many shops and fur factories are located. It’s simply unrealistic to get around everything in a day.
What is the disadvantage of buying a fur coat from Kastoria? The city is difficult to get to: from Thessaloniki airport to Kastoria is about 300 km. And considering that many roads in Greece are toll roads, the trip will not be cheap.
Parilia Katerini is a resort town on the shores of the Aegean Sea. Fur production here is poorly developed, but there are many pavilions and large stores. The most famous are “Scandinavia”, “Obsession Furs”, “Regina”. Like, in Parilia Katerini, almost all fur coats are dark fur, and for light ones it’s better to go to Kastoria.
Athens is the capital of Greece, and, as in any capital, prices here are steep. But the choice of fur coats is simply amazing. You should definitely visit at least these two salons: “Takisfurs” and “Avantifurs”.
By the way, you can also pay attention to the island of Corfu: this is not just a resort town, fur coats are also sold here, and from Kastorian factories. As they say, the price range for fur coats starts from 400 euros, of course, for “pieces”, and a whole mink starts from 800 euros.
Shub tour: pros and cons
If you really want a fur coat, but you don’t have the expenses for a full-fledged trip, you can go on a fur coat tour. What is this? This is an organized trip specifically for goods. Many travel agencies working with Greece offer this service. By the way, the stated minimum cost of the event is simply ridiculous (from several tens of euros).
There are 2 types of such tours:
- with obligations;
- without obligations.
What are these obligations? You undertake to purchase a fur coat not lower than the specified price, and for this you are taken to fur factories and stores. However, they show you far from the most budget-friendly places, but only those that sponsored the flight and accommodation. That is, everything is already included in the price of the fur coat. It’s worth thinking carefully: isn’t it cheaper to buy at least Chinese mink at home?
A fur tour without obligations means payment for the trip, but also a wider scope for choice: you are also taken around fur “oases”, but you are free to choose what, where and how much to buy.
Many organizers offer additional excursions, a free translator and assistance in making a purchase.
The shortest fur tour is from two days.
Independent trip
Vacationing in Greece? Then you can buy a fur coat at the same time. It is expensive to fly specifically to Greece to make a purchase. In addition to flights and accommodation, you can splurge on transport. For example, a taxi from Thessaloniki to Kastoria (one way) costs from 150 euros! Car rental – from 50 euros/day, while you need to take into account the costs of gasoline and toll roads. It doesn't come cheap! And if you don’t know Greek or don’t speak at least basic English, it may be difficult to make a purchase.
But there is also a significant plus: for single customers, even in those stores where fur coat tours are served, sellers are happy to make concessions, discounting a decent amount. And “singles” have plenty of time to wander around the shops, while groups are given no more than an hour to visit one factory or store.
How not to make a mistake when choosing a fur coat?
Even before the trip, it’s worth visiting fur stores in Russia, so to speak, “getting your eye on” and getting used to the intrusiveness of sellers. Yes, it is important! Usually, the cheaper and poorer the quality of the product, the more helpful and annoying the sellers! This is not only in Russia - it’s the same in Greece.
When choosing a fur coat, pay attention to the following points:
- A good fur coat does not have a seam along the bottom between the fur and the lining, but only a mark that allows you to see the internal seams and auction stamps on the fur from the inside.
- On loose fur coats, the looseness where the stripes are thinner is better. Large stripes make color steps visible. The finer the seam, the smoother the fabric, and therefore softer and lighter.
- Too low a price for the declared quality should alert you. As a rule, fur is not cheap at auctions. The cost of a mink fur coat starts from 1,400 euros, to this should be added the cost of work, transportation costs... A fur coat cannot cost less than fur if it is of high quality. Crafty manufacturers know how to make a profit from inexperienced buyers by offering a product where the fur is pre-stretched and trims are sewn into the collar, sides and hood. In addition, they can easily pass off cheap fur as expensive.
And one more tip! Due to economic instability, many stores do not accept plastic cards, so it is better to stock up on cash.
Is it profitable to buy a fur coat from Greece? Undoubtedly, if the organizers of the fur tour do not deceive you, or you are still planning a vacation on these sunny shores. For the same models in Russia, the price of fur coats is at least a third higher.

Purchase in Greece
If you go to Greece to buy a fur coat, you need to purchase it from large manufacturers, well-known brands with the best fur factories; prices in stores near factories are much lower. Where are these places:
- Most large producers are concentrated in Kastoria, the fur capital of Greece. Each factory has its own showroom (salon or store), where it offers a catalog with its models at affordable prices;
- The fur center is located in the city of Paralia Katerinis, affordable prices, there is an opportunity to bargain. Mostly fur coats for middle-income buyers, the assortment is varied;
- the town of Siatista near Kastoria. Fur factories offer various types of fur products at prices lower than in Kastoria, it is worth visiting the Naoum Furs factory;

Fur tours to Greece
< Fur factories in Greece There are many fur factories in Greece.
You will find even more all kinds of lists of these “factories”. And you will spend a long time looking at hundreds, and sometimes thousands of names of all these factories. Personally, all these lists remind me most of all of the census results of the towns of Kastoria and Siatista in northern Greece. Since it is completely impossible to imagine this in reality, I simply put comfortable sneakers on my feet and went to Kastoria .
In these sneakers I walked Kastoria and the surrounding environs along, across and around. Sometimes without even having time to have lunch... Yes, it was not easy for me... But now you see in front of you a list of fur factories, shops and simply fur coat places in Kastoria that really exist. I photographed them, for the most worthy ones, I measured the GPS coordinates where I could, wrote down the addresses (when you are in Kastoria, you will understand that it is very difficult to do this there), entered it all into the database, and here you are, enjoy it to your health!
Of course, my list does not pretend to be complete. About a hundred more factories can be found there. Here are only those factories whose presence is confirmed by at least two sources. The first and main source is my own eyes. Next, I searched and found the factory either on the official websites of various professional associations of furriers, or in the lists of participants in international fur exhibitions and auctions. Only after this did the fur factory enter my base. Thus, I consider my list of fur factories in Greece to be quite reliable .
By the way, if you get to know it better, you will see that most of the factories in it are from Kastoria and it would be natural to call it a list of factories in Kastoria, not Greece. You are partly right. But in order to be one hundred percent right, I still called it a list of fur factories in Greece. The fact is that in the Siatista , fur production is also being intensively developed and these factories are also entering the world market. I think over time their number in my table will increase.
