Holidays in Greece and buying a fur coat. "Bad Notes" of a Traveler

Holidays in Greece and buying a fur coat. "Bad Notes" of a Traveler. My wife and I had a desire to visit such an unusual and diverse country as Greece. The vacation was planned for 14 days in September, so that there was still time to sunbathe, lie down with a cocktail by the sea, and also buy my wife a gift for her wedding anniversary - a fur coat. We chose it on the advice of my sister, she has her own travel agency, located in Paralia Katerini (a resort town in the northern part of mainland Greece). From this point, many of the iconic sites of mainland Greece are accessible by car within two to three hours via the highway, such as Edessa (waterfalls), Meteora (monasteries in the mountains), Olympus (mountain range and picturesque national park of Greece), Loutra Pozar in Aridea ( natural thermal springs) and of course Kastoria (the true homeland of furs). And we can say, looking ahead, we made the right decision. Due to the peculiarities of this period in the work schedule, unfortunately, I had to postpone my vacation to October. We could have gone on vacation to the Dominican Republic, Turkey, the UAE, Thailand, etc., but since buying a fur coat was an important goal, we decided not to change our plans. I think anyone who has ever encountered this issue will understand what place Greece occupies in the fur business. The vacation was confirmed two weeks before the departure date and therefore the options of independently booking hotels, tickets and hassle with visas were rejected due to economic inexpediency. Based on the results of a review of proposals from tour operators and the advice of my sister, Mouzenidis Travel was chosen. We booked a tour for 11 nights/12 days in Paralia Katerini at the Mediaterranen Princess 4* hotel. Paid. Later we realized that this tour, due to arrivals and departures, turned out to be 11 nights/10 days. We collected the documents and handed them over to the tour operator’s employees on Saturday, they, in turn, carefully looked at the certificate of position, place of work and personal income tax-2, a photocopy of the marriage certificate and said - “monitor the readiness of your documents in your manager’s online account.” The visas were ready in a calendar week, as I understand there was no need to rush and therefore they did it slowly, and the minimum period for issuing documents at the airport was 3 working days. Now it was possible to deal with the issue of renting a car for the holiday period, since the dates have been postponed to October, you won’t be able to lie on the beach much. Returning to the past, I would like to note that after searching through information on the Internet about whether international rights are necessary, we decided not to risk it and did so. My wife found through an aggregator website (https://www.economycarrentals.com) a good offer for a seven-day rental of a car with an automatic transmission for 170 euros plus the option of an “additional driver” as a gift, although others such as well-known eurocar, hertz offered for 350 euros , including a second driver for 4 euros per day, and without blocking the franchise on the tenant’s card. So this joyful day has come - departure for vacation. Visiting duty free for courage !!! The flight to Thessaloniki was operated by Astra Airlines. The plane was empty. There are no complaints about the service. There were no delays in the departure, dinner on the plane, of course, was a little worse than at Aeroflot, instant coffee, but white or red wine was poured upon request. After arriving at Thessaloniki airport, we quickly went through passport control and went out into the city, where a girl guide was waiting for us, who asked for our names and gave us the bus number. No matter how hard I tried to see at twelve o’clock at night how we were being transported and the surrounding area, it didn’t work out. Then we repeated this path by car, but only by some inner feelings did we find the way. Upon arrival at the Mediaterranen Princess 4* hotel, dinner was waiting for us in the room: apples, two hamburgers, water, cheese. 1 day. Having woken up just in time for the end of breakfast at the hotel, we went to the hotel restaurant for the first time. Breakfast was buffet style; by the way, we can say that by the end of the vacation we were a little fed up with the assortment of morning treats. Our first day was spent getting to know the area around Paralia Katerini and Katerini. On the same day we went to several fur stores in Paralia. Only two stores can be distinguished - Ego, Marco Varni. The assortment in the rest looked like it was only on flights from China. I photographed my wife, where possible, in fur coats, so that she could see herself from the side on the screen. We've watched so much, it's scary to remember. We were interested in Blackglama fur coats, cross fur coats, and broadtail fur coats. My wife had her heart set on one model from Blackglama mink in Marco Varni, but I persuaded her to be patient and go to Kastoria. In the evening we walked around Katerini. Unfortunately, nothing can be noted except a park with fountains in the city center. I remember a very memorable moment: we asked a passing girl for directions and she turned out to be an emigrant from Belarus and told a lot of interesting things about the life of the Greeks. She characterized the indigenous people as sloths and called Katerini a city of pensioners. In the evening we went to dinner at the hotel. Day 2, after breakfast, we went to Katerini in order to later go to Thessaloniki via KTEL. We quickly got to Thessaloniki by bus. We found a place and a company where we could pick up a rental car and went for a walk around the city. The city is simply “stuffed” with architectural monuments. Anyone who loves such things, I highly recommend visiting this second largest city in Greece. We had a coffee at Starbucks. It is very similar to those seen in Moscow and Thailand. I would just like to draw the attention of dear readers that the toilets there are locked with combination locks and the key is provided upon request from an employee or on the receipt upon purchase. In the evening we picked up the car from the agent. For these 7 days we have a Kia CEED in white... It was a good car - it never let us down and the gas consumption with an automatic was within 7 liters per 100 km. In the evening we returned to the hotel very happy and tired. The next day a trip to Meteora was planned. Day 3. Getting up early in the morning and having breakfast, we went to Kalampaka, a city near the famous Meteors. The road was not tiring and after three hours we were already near this famous place. Already on the approaches to the monasteries we found ourselves strongly impressed by these places. I highly recommend everyone to visit the monasteries in Meteora. Just to have time to visit all the monasteries, you need to come with the aim of the opening, then you will have time. We arrived at 11.00 and did not have time to get to a couple of monasteries. I can confirm all the descriptions posted on the Internet from satisfied travelers. Everything that happened next seemed somehow different. Then from days 4 to 9, except for days 5 and 8, we visited Dion, Edessa, Loutra Pozar, Olympus. I would like to omit the description of these days, since readers can find a detailed description on the Internet. Let us now return to day 5 - after having breakfast at the hotel, we left for Kastoria. According to the navigator, the distance from Paralia to Kastoria is 200 km. Quite recently, a good autobahn was built, where the speed limit is up to 130 km/h, with one 90-degree turn. As for toll roads, at this distance there were two toll points of 2.20 and 2.40 euros, but it’s worth it, the roads are excellent!!! We drove two hours to the end point of our journey with one stop at a Shell gas station. By the way, I haven’t written before, but I want to emphasize that this brand has good, full-fledged complexes by the road, by the way, about the same BP - ordinary gas stations with the sale of franchises to individuals. In the Shell complexes you will find WC, showers, a minimarket, and a snack bar with reasonable prices for fast food. Before Kastoria, at a distance of 30-40 km, on the mountain on the right there is an advertisement for Manzari, as it later turned out if you exit the highway at this place and follow the signs, you can find the Manzari fur factory. Looking ahead, I will say that I will talk about it in my report about the 8th day of the trip. We entered the city and not knowing where or how, we simply drove to the city center through Dispillio along the road on the lake shore, looking at advertising banners and signs. After 4 km we saw Avanti and Marco Varni stores. In fact, we can say that this is almost why we went, because we read a lot about Avanti on the internet, and my wife looked at a fur coat at Marco Varni. First we went to Avanti. Two floors filled with furry beauties . What I can say from my male opinion: in general, their models are interesting, but their prices are correspondingly high. At this point, I probably “messed up” - the saleswoman asked if we were from the hotel, but my attention was distracted by the models of fur coats and I nodded my head. And then, coming to his senses, he said that we were by car, but most likely they could no longer remove the well-known 10-20% markup of the famous operator in Greece. My wife liked the fur coat that fell just below the knee. Next we went to Marco Varni. A three-story building, where new items are on the third floor, last year’s models and not only from mink are on the second floor. My wife saw a model she was interested in, asked to try it on, liked everything, asked the price again - it turned out to be 1000 euros more than in Paralia. They started haggling and got 400 euros. As a result, no more. We pointed out that the prices in Paralia were different and lower by another 600 euros, they assured us that we were mistaken and they had the fairest prices. We left this store slightly disappointed, but I would like to note that this store has good things. Everyone can find something to suit their taste, but you just have to bargain, perhaps even symbolically leave the store (as a result, you can hear the extreme price). We decided to go to other stores. We all also drove along the shore of the lake to the city center. Not far away we saw the store Naomi and Papadopulus (PKZ Furs). We went to Naomi. The worst fur store I've ever seen in Greece. I don't recommend wasting your precious time on it. What confused me: — the fur coats don’t have labels (to the question where, if you want, we’ll sew the answer — most likely naked China); — the flesh of the skins is not white, they are clearly dyed; - the saleswomen are the most arrogant and uncultured in Greece. The shocked people ran away from Naomi. Next we went to Papandopulos (PKZ Furs). When we arrived, a fur coat group from Russia from Mouzenidis Travel was already shopping there. My wife, trained in hiking, immediately said from the door that she was not with them and we were on our own (without accompanying people) - well done. She was taken to a separate room and all the fittings took place without contact with our fellow countrymen on the fur tour. It was there that I saw fur more similar to Blackglama, which was seen earlier in Moscow GUM. Wow, we tried on so many of these coats from Blackglama. Considering that we live in Moscow, we needed a light, fashionable fur coat - we already understood this at the end of the fittings. Fur coats from Papandopulos (PKZ Furs) are made of good quality, but they are more suitable for regions of Russia where it is very cold in winter - Siberia, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Baikal for example. Our eyes didn’t fall on a single thing and we decided to go to another EGO store. We searched for a long time and found it - we missed it in the morning when entering the city (1 km Dispillio). Walking around the store we saw interesting models, but strangely enough the assortment was no greater than in Paralia Katerini. I sat down on the sofa, and my wife kept walking and watching. Here they brought a Russian fur band from Mouzenidis. It was something. It was the first time I saw so many women running around wanting to buy a fur coat . They have limited time, so they try on everything that is hanging and offered by sellers. But there was one big plus - the sellers were distracted by them and my wife walked quietly alone and studied the assortment and listened to what prices they were calling (they were charging twice as much). After running around the store for 15-20 minutes, the group left. We calmly looked around and left without making a purchase. What can I say based on my impressions of the fur coat group: - the markup on a fur coat is real, but its size is approximately 1-2 thousand euros, depending on the price; - time is short for choice and you can, without realizing it, buy the wrong thing and then regret it; - My wife will never go on such a tour; — in the group there may be sent Cossack women who travel with everyone else and “advise” which fur coat suits best and which one should definitely be bought. I can ascertain this fact by the way they walked, chose their fur coats, what they said to others, and what questions they asked me. You only need to trust your own opinion - it’s better not to buy something that will hang like a big robe in the closet. Then we stopped at a tavern, had lunch, and discussed the state of affairs. During lunch, we decided that we had seen all the worthwhile places and we could leave for Paralia. On our way out, we stopped at another store “with German roots,” saw fur coats with sewn-in linings that looked more like China, didn’t see anything worthwhile, tried on a couple of astrakhan fur coats and left Kastoria. Already at 21.00 we were at the hotel in Paralia. The next day, after having a good breakfast, we took a tour of two stores, Ego and Marco Varni, and bought a fur coat that we had eyed on the first day at Marco Varni. We arrived in the room and started trying on the fur coat, taking pictures, and then the unexpected happened... my wife was trying on the fur coat for a white T-shirt and when she took it off, she saw that there were fur hairs left on the T-shirt in the neck area, that is, fur was coming out of one of the skins on the collar, we tried tugging , so it doesn’t just climb, but crumbles.... even with a light touch with a slightly damp hand, a large number of hairs remain! In general, a defect in the preparation of skins in the most inappropriate place. We took a fur coat and went to the store. For a long time they tried to convince us that this was how it should be (this is what hurts the most), but we insisted that the fur coat be replaced. My wife, of course, was a little depressed that such a brand as Marco Varni also had defects. In the evening, the satisfied people had a photo shoot  The 7th day of rest arrived. Having tried out the financial possibilities, I decided whether we should take another chance on another fur coat. When will we come to Greece again... there are so many places where we have not been yet... I suggested that my wife go to Kastoria again... She agreed, impressed. On the 8th day, after breakfast we left for Kastoria. Already at 10 o'clock we were at the entrance to the city. Only this time we started looking for a fur coat from Manzari. We stopped at a factory, which is located 30-40 km from the city. It's a pity that we didn't stop by Manzari earlier. There were good mink models at reasonable prices. They also offered to sew a fur coat to order and the price was reasonable, I think with the possibility of bargaining. An example of a fur coat just below the knee made to order from Blackglama 4800 euros. We saw a cross fur coat on a hanger. My wife tried it on and couldn’t leave it on the hanger; after haggling for 100 euros, we bought a fur coat (they discounted it a little, since the price was already low, to put it mildly). We went further to Kastoria. We stopped at Avanti again. We looked at not very expensive things. Without buying anything we went to Marco Varni. It’s strange, but after that incident in Paralia, I thought my wife wouldn’t even want to hear about them. Apparently the contradiction has been resolved. They chose for a long time, bargained, said that there was no money, they just didn’t leave the store and ended up buying an elegant fur coat made of astrakhan fur with mink fur trim. I would like to finish my story by making theses from the experience gained: I. Prices as of October 2013 in the stores Papandopulos (PKZ Furs), Marco Varni, EGO, Avanti, Manzari (auction fur and prices for pelts are reduced very rarely, it will most likely be up): 1. Good quality Blackglama fur coats (label and passport present) to the knee without a hood start at 3,000 euros; 2. Knee-length Blackglama fur coats with a Barguzin sable collar from 5,000 euros; 3. Astrakhan fur coat from 2200 euros to 3000, astrakhan fur from 1000 euros; 4. Fur coat from a crossover 2200 euros and above; 5. Silver fox sleeveless vest from 650 to 950 euros; 6. Scandinavian mink – autolady from 1300 euros. 7. Rex sleeveless vest – 800 euros.

II. Tips for buying a fur coat: 1. If you come to Paralia on vacation, then it is better to also visit Kastoria. Rent a car and in 2 hours on a good highway you will reach the fur capital of Europe. If you go by public transport, then this route is possible on transfers through Thessaloniki, then it is best to spend the night in Kastoria, otherwise you will not have time to get around everything and see the assortment. Don’t be fooled by trips of 20 euros from a tour operator; as soon as the group arrives at the factories, the rule of 20% or more, plus the cost of the fur coat, immediately applies. Tourists from Russia are the main buyers of fur products in Greece and they will not quarrel with Mouzenidis Travel. Be sure to visit the following stores: EGO, Avanti, Marco Varni, Papandopulos (PKZ Furs); 2. Before your trip, read on the Internet how to choose a fur coat. Outline which models you would like to buy; if it’s a classic, then you need to go to factories and showrooms with a history like PKZ. How we chose fur: a) in trusted stores; b) the lining must be sewn by hand and allow one to see the quality of the fur and tailoring of the fur coat along the entire lower perimeter; c) the lining fabric should not be cheap, like on Chinese fur coats; d) the flesh should not rustle when twisted by hand; e) the flesh should be white, but not dark, this is the first sign of coloring; 3. Come and enter the salon/store alone; as soon as you enter, immediately say that you are independent buyers and without accompanying persons; 4. Bargain, look at all the factors that affect the fur. Don’t trust a name or a well-promoted brand – you have come to a place where profit is the main thing. Trust your feelings and check everything several times; 5. Review tags for duplicates. In this case, the help of husbands will be very useful, since while the sellers are busy they can look through other fur coats. Dial the number on the Blaknafa or Blackglama websites. But unfortunately, if the manufacturer wants to, don’t rely too much on it... I already looked at the results of the auction in Seattle at home - the difference between the lots can reach an order of magnitude. The top lot sold for $1,200 per skin, and the rest for $210-260, so gentlemen, draw your conclusion how much a fur coat made from these skins could cost; 6. I can also advise husbands to be patient and immerse themselves in this process together with their wives. If the consultants allow it, then it is better to photograph the spouse in all the submitted samples of furriers’ work. If you feel that your wife is tired of trying on, go to a cafe, think about next steps; 7. It is imperative to take the fur coat out into the light, outside the salon. No salon will refuse you this. Only now I realized that if you want, you can make the light correctly - light bulbs come in different brightnesses and shades; 8. Develop a signaling system between wife and husband: I like the fur coat, the fur coat sucks, I need to think about it. The wife should signal her husband to cheat the consultants at a low price. Always bargain. Sellers, and especially all the “right” or “left” hands of factory owners, see a sea of buyers and have become professional psychologists. Remember, you can live without their product, but they may “starve” without your purchase. They work for you. If you don’t buy here, then buy somewhere else, for example in Italy . They will not sell below cost; 9. I still don’t understand whether calls are actually being made to the owner to reduce the price or this is another marketing ploy. I used to think that this is a scam and the price was agreed upon long ago and initially they simply put the buyer in the position of a debtor... While I’m thinking and typing data. In future trips and purchases in other countries, I will experiment on this issue. The day of departure arrived. The flight was delayed by one hour due to the ship being late to Thessaloniki. But we went to Duty Free twice to spend the remaining euros!) Overall, we were very pleased with the trip!) Ps: this is my first trip report, and I’m not a writer, so don’t judge too harshly!) I wrote in the hope that It may be useful to someone and in some way!) Interesting travels and successful shopping to everyone!!!)
