Lengthening a mink coat
When deciding to alter a fur item from mink fur, remember that initially it is sewn either from horizontally directed skins or from several vertical ones. It is easier to alter the product with the fur pieces in a horizontal direction. For example, to lengthen it by 20-25 cm, you will need two pieces of fur. For those fur coats that are sewn from vertically arranged skins, it is necessary to use 4-5 pieces of fur. Of course, the second option costs much more and requires more professionalism from the seamstress. Given the complexity, owners of fur coats often send the product to a studio for alteration.
Please note that fur products made from natural skins consist of several individual pieces. If you start altering the product incorrectly, the appearance may be ruined forever. During the process, you also need to tear off the lining. This must be done carefully, without damaging the fur layer. It is necessary to connect pieces of fur using special threads. For more reliable fastening, the seams are taped with double tape.

Ways to lengthen a fur coat and elongated models
Situations often arise when a mink or mouton coat loses its attractiveness due to its length.
This problem occurs mainly with short sheepskin coats (“autolady” style). It would seem that a convenient and fashionable style allows you to move comfortably in a car. However, on the street and in everyday life it is a little cold in such a fur coat. Is it possible to lengthen a boring product? Yes, clothes are altered at home or in a studio for a fee, depending on the complexity of the work. If you have no experience in sewing fur products, you should still contact the craftsmen. They will select the right fur and adjust it to the required length.

Not only old fur coats can be used for recutting. By the way, the surface of a sheepskin coat can sometimes be refreshed and even completely repainted. In dry cleaning, such a service is quite expensive, so you can do the painting yourself. New zipper instead of buttons
The most difficult thing is to remake the clasp with loops and buttons so that it is not noticeable. To do this, you need to disassemble the old loops, sew them up and remove the buttons. Then stitch these strips of leather and insert a large metal or twisted zipper. In this process, you will definitely need a sewing machine capable of sewing rough seams from genuine leather. At home, an analogue of such a machine can be a Singer or a Podolsk sewing machine of an old manual or foot model.
It is not necessary to shift the line of the fastener, the main thing is to cover the marks from sewing on buttons and loops, and you also need to take into account the measurement of volume in the chest and waist. When installing a zipper and adjusting leather strips, it may change, check.

Before you start altering, you should try on the product and evaluate it from the outside. The easiest way to lengthen fur coats with your own hands is to cross them. They have visible seams that are quick and easy to rip. It is easier to sew pieces of the same color and texture to the main fur. An example of the model is shown in the photo.
In addition to skins, you will need:
- lining fabric;
- needles;
- measuring tape, chalk;
- strong, but not thick threads, for example, from lavsan.
Scissors, a razor blade, and a steamer may also come in handy. All these tools should be used carefully so as not to damage the skin of the product.
If the elongated mink coat is wide enough, it can be sewn in. The resulting trimmings are used for lengthening. In this case, the flaps will not differ in color.
For reference! Difficulties often arise with skins that are combined with each other. Often the sleeves and the length of the product are lengthened at the same time. Often you have to completely repaint a long fur coat if the shades do not match.
