Think about whether you should throw away your fur coat or take it to the dacha, if you can dye the fur and wear it for a couple more seasons. It doesn’t matter whether it is natural or artificial, the main thing is to know all the secrets and subtleties of this procedure.
How and where to dye natural fur? What paint to choose and is it possible to dye faux fur at home?
Dyeing a white mink coat
Mink coloring features
The structure of mink products is as close as possible to human hair, which means that you can successfully transform them using high-quality hair dye. It is advisable to use a safe, long-lasting product that has already been tested on your curls. Most gentle paints from reputable manufacturers are suitable for working with delicate natural fur.
Fur dyeing technique
Typically, fur coats are repainted at home using a spray bottle. It is necessary to maintain a distance by placing the container with paint 50-70 centimeters from the surface to be treated. When applying the product, you need to additionally distribute it using your palms or a comb. This approach will allow you to quickly remove excess dye and achieve a uniform tone over the entire area of the clothing.
Drying a fur coat
After dyeing, the fur product must be properly dried. This final stage should be carried out carefully and without haste. This task can be accomplished using a household hair dryer. During the process, you need to continuously comb the pile. Do not neglect thorough drying, as otherwise the fur may take on an unaesthetic appearance.
Treating fur with balm
According to the experience of resourceful women, hair balm fits optimally on the mink. This cosmetic product gives the fur softness and a new shiny look. It is important to use quality products.
Professional dyeing of fur coats
If you are not confident in the impeccable result of dyeing fur at home, then you should not take the risk. You can renew a mink product with the help of dry cleaning specialists. Experienced workers will be able to select a special dye that will give the desired shade, and at the same time provide a guarantee for the complete safety of the fur.
Mink dyes
If you are dyeing a fur coat for the first time, then it is better to follow the recommendations of experts. They say that the best results are obtained from paints sold under the Prestige and Fara brands. When the operation is performed correctly, the fur will remain bright and beautiful for several months. After prolonged use, the color may fade. Not all colors are available for mink, but only noble chestnut, strict black and the most spectacular of them – red. It is the latter option that promises to be the most attractive and last as long as possible. Black color is also in demand, but the tone may become dull over time and acquire a brown tint.
Useful tips for dyeing fur coats
Inexperienced women should better prepare for the procedure by watching video tutorials on the relevant topic. Preliminary receipt of information on updating fur and studying the common mistakes of others will help prevent damage to the product. Here's an interesting idea: you can use a stencil and get an original leopard print color. So, now we have figured out whether it is possible to dye a white mink coat and we know for sure that this is quite feasible if all the rules are followed.

How to clean and dye natural fur at home
In this small master class I will show you how you can clean and tint yellowed natural fur at home.
I will say right away that any fur can be cleaned in this way, but the process of dyeing or tinting is only suitable for small fur products, their parts, elements.
It is impossible to dye the entire fur coat in this way, because... you will not be able to ensure uniform coloring of all the fur in the product.
For cleaning and subsequent tinting we will need:
1. Cotton pads or white cotton cloth for wiping
2. Alcohol or vodka
3. Spray paint for fur, FURASOL or Salamander (exactly for fur!)
4. Comb (comb) or brush for combing fur
5. PVC film to protect the table surface from paint
6. Rubber or any other waterproof gloves to avoid getting paint on your hands.
and, in fact, the fur itself.
I will show the whole process on a piece of fur from an old gray-blue mink, yellowed with age.
I'll try to restore her lost beautiful look.
First, I comb the fur thoroughly, running the comb in the direction of hair growth, and then in the exact opposite direction. And so I comb back and forth several more times.
I try to comb the underfur completely, but without “strong zeal” so as not to comb out too much.
Then I wipe it with a cotton pad moistened with vodka (or alcohol) and clean the surface of the fur from dust, at the same time degreasing it and preparing it for tinting with spray paint.
This must be done carefully so as not to wet the leather part (the skin itself), only the fur. I wipe, if necessary, also in different directions, replacing the cotton pad with a new one if necessary.
The main thing is not to wet the skin - this is important!
After the fur is cleaned, I comb it again and leave it on the table until it dries completely under natural conditions.
When the fur is completely dry, I will definitely comb it again.
In this way, you can clean not only the fur on your handbag, collar or other fur accessories, you can also clean some dirty places on your fur coat.
Now that the mink fur is completely dry, let's start tinting it.
I select the spray paint closest to the shade or sometimes a little brighter (depending on the desired result).
Important!
- Always choose paint only for fur!
If, for example, you take a spray paint intended for leather, after treatment the fur will stick together and become even worse than before.
- Be sure to try it on a very small piece or in an inconspicuous place first!
Rarely, but there are cases when the chemical composition of the paint in contact with the chemical composition of the processed fur can give an unpredictable reaction! For example, go green!
Therefore, it is very important to first test your fur for reaction.
So, let's paint))
Be sure to spray the paint evenly, from a distance of approximately 20-25 cm, slightly at an angle to the horizontal surface of the fur. If you don’t have any experience with this, it’s better to try it on a piece of fur first. You can even just use a blank sheet of paper to feel how hard you press and how evenly the paint will apply.
.Spread the film, put on gloves and spray! I also have a white sheet of paper underneath (to absorb excess paint, but this is not necessary).
To illustrate the result, I paint only half a piece of mink, quickly rubbing the paint with light movements to ensure uniform coloring:
Then I comb it and leave it alone for a while to dry naturally.
When it dries, the color becomes less intense and if this effect is not enough for you, you can repeat the spraying. The main thing is to do it evenly and from the right distance.
For not very old, slightly yellowed fur, you only need to spray a little paint. Then you get a soft, pleasant shade.
In my case, the fur is old, yellowed and very faded, so I repeat the whole process again:
And now I’m already waiting for it to dry completely, I recommend at least 24 hours.
Then it is advisable to comb it: in the direction of hair growth, against the direction of hair growth and finish in the direction.
Shake and admire the result!
Well, as they say, feel the difference!
I'll add two more important points:
1. When working with fur, protect the leather part (inner) of your product from moisture (alcohol, paint...) If suddenly such an oversight occurs, under no circumstances use any drying devices! Natural drying only.
2. If you feel that you have applied too much paint: while still wet, you can lightly evenly touch the surface of the fur to remove a little excess paint using a piece of white cotton cloth or a cotton pad. If this is not enough, you can lightly dampen a cloth with alcohol and repeat. Then be sure to comb the fur and let it dry.
In parallel with the gray mink, I tinted a piece of very yellowed white mink with the same paint (also not completely, for comparison):
For hiding heavily yellowed fur, this is a good result.
But, I want to draw your attention to the fact that if you look closely: the long (guard) hairs of the once snow-white bleached mink are difficult to dye, although in general the effect is not bad.
I tried to show in more detail and collect here all the most important information on this topic. I hope it will help you and be useful in caring for your furry products!
If you have any questions, I will be happy to answer!
This is my first master class for you, I will be very, very glad for your support
Thank you!
Your Tatyana
How to care for a white mink coat?
Properties of a white mink coat
A new snow-white mink coat is dazzlingly beautiful, but after a while it inevitably takes on an ugly yellowish tint. Such a product does not radiate luxury; a woman in it looks unkempt. To refresh a fur coat and bleach it efficiently, it is better not to use folk remedies; there are dry cleaners for this purpose. It is possible that a slight yellow coating can be removed using improvised means, but in advanced cases only special chemicals will help.
Safe use of a white fur coat
In order to extend the life of mink fur, the product should be treated as follows:
- avoid contact of fur with perfume, the product may cause yellowing;
- even if there are no noticeable defects, the product must be taken to professional dry cleaning annually for preventive purposes;
- when the fur has been damaged by rain or snow, you should not dry it near heating devices, just hang the product in a warm place;
- it is necessary to protect the fur coat in every possible way from rubbing vulnerable areas, such as pockets, shoulders, cuffs; it is recommended to minimize the wearing of watches, bracelets, bags with a shoulder strap, and piercing the fur with pins and brooches;
- When driving your car, it is better to prevent the mink from coming into contact with the heated seat, otherwise yellowing may appear.
With proper care, a white natural mink fur coat will last about ten years. If you want to buy a light fur coat that will look great even after prolonged wear, then you can give preference not to a pure white product, but to pleasant shades. For example, beige, palomino, lavender, melted ice and pastel are fascinatingly beautiful colors of natural mink, on which yellowness is not noticeable at all.
Preparatory procedures
Before painting or repainting a sheepskin coat, you should prepare it well for the procedure:
- First you need to carefully tear off the lining without damaging the fur.
- Remove the product from various decorations (buttons, brooches, hooks).
- The pile of a fur coat must be degreased, since during its use the villi are likely to become covered with a film, which will make it difficult for the paint to penetrate deep into the fur.
The degreasing procedure is usually done in dry cleaners, but if you want to paint the product yourself, you can clean it yourself by preparing the following solution:
- Baking soda, salt (regular, not extra), any detergent and water are placed in a deep container in equal quantities.
- All components are mixed until a thick consistency is formed.
- We treat the fur with the resulting solution so that it spreads evenly throughout the pile (heavily contaminated areas, such as elbow areas, bottom of sleeves, collar, areas around buttons, are treated more thoroughly).
Next, you should dry the sheepskin coat naturally. After complete drying, vigorously shake the fur coat and comb it with a brush designed to remove hair from clothing.
People who have dyed their hair at least once in their lives know that dye dries it out a lot. Based on this, it can be assumed that a similar effect will be exerted on the mink coat. This should not be allowed , as overdried fur will break and the fur coat will lose its neat appearance.
You should not paint the entire product at once. First, use the dye on a small area of the fur coat to see how it shows itself and what happens to the fur. If it happens that the treated area has faded, then it is better not to change the color of the fur coat, but lighten it. For lightening, a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ammonia is usually used.
Why is there a need to change the color of the product?
Now many women turn to specialists with a request to dye their mink coat or sheepskin coat. The main reason is the loss of the original color of the product, fading, and deterioration of the fur in general. This in turn arises due to:
- Old things - the fading of fur over time is familiar to everyone.
- Improper storage conditions, as a result of which the item loses its attractiveness and strength.
- Unsuccessful dyeing in the past - often owners of fur coats try to dye the fur themselves or turn to unqualified specialists.
Either way, a problem arises and something needs to be done.
Fur care after dyeing
Over time, the hairs of old fur can become stiff and dull even after dyeing. To eliminate the problem, you can periodically rinse the product with hair balm. It is better to take the product that comes with the paint (you can buy inexpensive paint and take out the balm). Spraying the item with a 9% vinegar solution (a spoon per glass of water) will also add shine. The effect of painting will be temporary in any case. Once a season, it’s worth touching up the item so that it doesn’t lose its shine and always looks attractive!
How to dye a mink fur product?
First of all, you should remember that you should not try to paint it yourself . This process is quite complex and ineffective. Usually it does not bring the expected result and only aggravates the problem, after which expensive professional help may be required.
You should initially contact trusted specialists . It is best to use the services of a fur workshop or specialized workshops. Only technologies used by professionals will help restore your item to its former beauty and not spoil the fur. Thanks to professional equipment, you won't have to worry about your clothes for a long time.
The specialist must examine the fur coat before disclosing all the details of the service. This check usually includes an external examination of the product, the strength of the seams, and the condition of the fur and leather. Check with the master whether the cost of painting includes work with the hood and restoration (more on this in the next paragraph). Which color to choose is up to you. Just remember that it is better to avoid bright, unnatural colors for fur (red, blue, etc.), because When dyeing these tones, toxic chemicals are used that affect the quality of the fur and leather lining.
There are several ways to dye fur (spread, dip, combined, etc.). They differ in technology features and are used for different purposes (detailed consultation is carried out immediately before the provision of the service). It is worth resorting to deep coloring , and not simple tinting (in this case, the quality of the product may deteriorate sharply, and the color itself does not last long). After good dyeing, the fur will not lose quality, the color will be distributed evenly, the skin will remain soft and elastic. The fur coat not only becomes “younger”, its service life increases, and the product is completely renewed.
The result you should expect is a fur coat that looks “like new.” The color should be distributed evenly, not in pieces, and there should be no streaks. Check the fur - with high-quality dyeing, it remains soft and thick.
How much does it cost to dye a mink coat?
The main topic of the article is the cost of the service. As mentioned earlier, the painting procedure cannot be called cheap. The cost consists of various factors, but be prepared to pay at least 10 thousand rubles . The price depends on the following criteria:
- Coloring method.
- Products used (chemicals, paints).
- Size (length) of the fur coat.
- Style.
- Paint color.
- The condition of the fur before painting.
Let's give an example of the price list of an average studio in Moscow. Long fur coat from 100 cm - 20 thousand , short fur coat up to 100 cm - 17.5 thousand , short fur coat up to 90 cm - 15 thousand , fur jacket - 13.5 thousand (all in rubles). At the same time, the mentioned prices do not include restoration, but it is required after painting in order to apply the “finishing touches”. Restoration will cost the owner of a fur coat 18-30 thousand rubles depending on the length, but due to the high cost, this process should in no case be neglected.
The cost of services is usually lower for craftsmen working at home or in little-known companies, but it is better to contact reputable workshops, because They have professional equipment and therefore use the best technologies.
About painting
Dyeing fur with hair dye at home is now widespread. The fur of mink, khanorika, kolinsky, marten, muskrat and other animals can be painted with durable household cream paints. Currently, there are a large number of different cream paints on the market, prices range from several hundred to tens of rubles.
To dye fur, it is advisable to choose a paint that is not expensive, light-resistant and resistant to the aquatic environment. It is very convenient to paint small skins, pieces and ready-made fur caps for hats with such paints. One or two packs are required for one skin, depending on the size of the fur and the fur. Paint consists of the contents of two tubes: a tube of paint and a tube of oxidizing agent (peroxide). After mixing the contents of two tubes in a separate container, the paint is applied as a spread and rubbed into the fur with a swab.
Spread paint application
When dyeing fur with oxidizing or acidic dyes, many inconveniences arise. For example, when painting with oxidizing dyes, it is not advisable to paint one or two skins or a sewn fur cap for a hat, since several components are required: black urzol for fur D, pyrocatechin or resorcinol, ammonia 25%, salt and oxidizing agent (perhydrol 30%). Before painting, the fur must be etched in a chromium paint in an acidic environment. The etching and painting processes are lengthy and take up almost the entire daylight hours; painting is carried out using the dip method in separate baths at a temperature of 35 -38 degrees.
What to paint with what
Next, you need to assess the condition of the fur and find out how you can dye it, because there are some nuances here.
IMPORTANT! Don't risk dyeing new fur because you just want to change the color. The procedure may ruin it.
The most common question is: “Can I dye my fur with hair dye?” The answer will be positive, but not clear. And here's why:
- Real fur is possible. Animal fur and fluff are similar in structure to human hair. Therefore, hair dye can cope with the task. Choose ammonia-based dyes - they “set” stronger and last longer.
- Faux fur can be damaged by aggressive hair dye components.
For coloring use:
- hair dye and bleach;
- dye for suede.
What hair dyes can you use?
From a large number of household cream paints, you need to choose paints that provide dyed fur with good resistance to light, water and mechanical stress. When painting mink fur, depending on whether the fur is old or new, the paint consumption is small. If we need to dye skins with long-haired fur (Arctic fox, fox, silver fox or sable), paint consumption increases significantly, especially when dyeing light skins in dark colors and new fur. In this case, the issue of price is acute.
For dyeing mink, muskrat and other fur skins, the following stable household cream hair dyes have proven themselves to be effective: FARA, IMPRESION +, PRESTIGE. Dyed items retain their color for 2–3 years, are not washed off with water, and are almost indistinguishable in color from natural, undyed skins.

Fur dyeing
Test the dye on a small area, and if you are satisfied with the test result, proceed to dye the fur. Put gloves on your hands. Dilute the paint according to the instructions on the package. Apply the composition with a brush to the entire surface, and then rub it with your hands. This will allow you to paint the fur more evenly.
Let the paint soak in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, and then rinse with warm water and vinegar. This will allow you to consolidate the result. You can additionally add silkiness and shine to natural fur. Using a brush, apply hair conditioner to the dried fur and leave it to absorb according to the instructions. After this, rinse the product thoroughly, removing any unabsorbed product residue, and dry again. The results of such painting will last for about six months, after which the procedure should be repeated.
If you need to paint only the tips of the fur fibers, then take suede paint, sold in aerosol cans. Spray it from a distance of 60-70 cm. Do not keep the can in one place for too long, otherwise the product will be painted unevenly. Brush the fur immediately with a brush to prevent the hairs from sticking together.
Products made from natural fur are always a priority for women, because it is beautiful, expensive and prestigious. But what if something goes wrong with your favorite fur coat, it gets faded in the sun, or paint gets on it? It doesn’t matter - after all, it’s quite possible to dye natural fur even at home. In order to dye natural fur, you will need the most ordinary hair dye. The choice of color palette in this case is not limited: from fiery red to coal black. Just remember that after this dyeing, the color of the fur lasts up to eight months, after which the red one fades and fades, and the black one turns into dark brown and gradually turns red. You can also try to lighten the fur, but the result may be quite unexpected: the muskrat becomes soft peach with a white undercoat, and the beaver turns yellow.
Before painting it is worth doing a little preparatory work. The core (the bottom layer of the skin) should be soaked in rich cream, thus preventing it from drying out. Apply the paint to pre-moistened fur - the color will look deeper and lie more evenly. If you do not want to radically change the shade of the fur, then you should generally dry it slightly - the color will be less intense.
After applying the dye, carefully remember the fur with your hands, rubbing the dye over the entire surface. Make sure there are no unpainted areas. Leave the product for the same time as when dyeing your hair, that is, 30-35 minutes.
After waiting the required time, wash off the paint under a powerful stream of water. You can keep the skin in a saline solution for several minutes so that the color lasts longer and the hairs shine in the sun. Gently wring out the fur - you can lay it out on the bathroom wall and vigorously run your hand over it several times.
Then lay the skin on a surface to dry. It is better to let it drain and dry on its own. Comb the fur in the desired direction.
Advice from Osinka. Skin coloring. Cheap skins, when properly processed and dyed, can look like expensive furs. Previously, dyeing furs was a very complex matter: it was done using various mordants from chromium, iron and copper sulfate, etc. The introduction of aniline dyes into practice significantly simplified production, increased color strength and the range of shades obtained.
When using aniline dyes, color appears on the fibers with the help of oxidizing agents, such as sodium perborate, hydrogen peroxide, etc. Sodium perborate is more convenient than hydrogen peroxide, it does not decompose so quickly and is cheaper.
2. Aniline dyes for skins. Skin coloring can be done in two ways. According to the first method, the entire skin is immersed in a dye bath (immersion dyeing), according to the second, the dye liquid is applied to the hair with a brush (direction).
If the skins are rich in fat, then before painting they should be treated with the following mixture: 500 g of slaked lime, 250 g of iron sulfate, 150 g of alum per 10 liters of water. Apply the mixture with a brush, after which the skins are dried and washed well several times in water. Thanks to this treatment, the hair is degreased and easier to color.
For skins that are less fatty, you can wash them using a solution of soda (6° according to B.) and soap. The use of caustic soda should be avoided.
One more tip. First of all, we process the mesh as follows. Apply ordinary glycerin (not too much or too little) to the surface of the mesh carefully so as not to touch the fur fibers along the edges. We buy ordinary hair dye of the desired color (note that the colors when dyeing light fur correspond completely to the sample on palette of colors) henna - there will be red fur, basma - dark green. When the glycerin has absorbed a little, take a board and use sewing pins to pin the fur around the perimeter, and paint according to the instructions attached to the selected paint. Wash off after a specified time with a shower without removing from the board. Gently blot with a towel and dry it with a hairdryer. Done! If you want to make spots of a different color, then wrap the painted areas in foil, there will be a beautiful spot.
Painting tip. I am writing at the request of workers on the eve of winter. We dye the fur, in my case there was a collar. The dyeing technology is simple - we rip off the collar so that there is only fur, no fabric, etc. We take hair dye - I used Garnier Phytolinia black (it gave the best result), dilute the paint - I used the entire bottle on a large collar, and apply the paint on a board dressed in a plastic bag with an old toothbrush. There's a catch here - the fur is thick, the arctic fox and the mink are dyed worse than the marmot - the undercoat is stained everywhere. It takes a long time and tediously to move the brush in different directions in order to evenly distribute the paint. Leave for the time indicated on the paint bottle. Periodically comb the fur with a brush to make it more even. Rinse off in the shower and apply (if available) balm. We wash it off again. And then we pin the wet fur along the edge of the skin onto the board with needles. Let's dry it. I removed it from the board when the fur was dry and the flesh was semi-dry. During the drying process, I brushed it with a clothes brush. Then I dried it in air. At the end, it would be good to spread the flesh with glycerin, or hand cream, or just sunflower oil. Well, then - sew! Smile The main thing is not to dry it with a hairdryer, and not to let it dry without tension - my mink shrank after that, began to tear, in general - I ruined the fur. But if everything is done well, my brown marmot has become completely black, soft and smells like a pleasant balm. Good luck!
During prolonged wear, a fur product may lose its attractiveness only because the fur has faded either from the sun or from exposure to precipitation. In this case, there are two ways of restoration. Specialized enterprises that provide dry cleaning and painting services know how to do this efficiently. But you can give a “second life” to your favorite thing at home. By following the instructions and applying some of your own imagination, you will be able to create a unique work of art.
If the age of a fur product is indicated by its color, then you can update the appearance by painting.
For gray astrakhan, only black or brown is used. Mink is dyed in its native colors in order to restore faded shades. Black or brown pigment is suitable for mouton products. Fur items in beige tones are dyed in all shades of brown to enhance the intensity of the native color. Choose a paint one or two shades darker for the job.
The main condition for high-quality and uniform coloring is. An alkaline solution has proven to be the best cleaning agent; its composition is as follows:
- soda (dessert spoon);
- salt (dessert spoon);
- ammonia (teaspoon);
- about 15 drops of detergent
- 1 liter of water.
Lightening yellowed white fur is an additional element of color restoration. To do this, use a solution with hydrogen peroxide (a teaspoon) and ammonia (10 drops). This product can remove yellowness from the fur of a silver fox. When processing with this composition, deep soaking should be avoided. First, make a test on an inconspicuous area of the product. 15 minutes is enough for lightening. It must be remembered that a
longer process will make the ends brittle
.
Chalk and starch help remove yellowness from the fur of a gray rabbit for a while. The powder is rubbed evenly and with little effort over the top of the pile and shaken off. This method will not harm the product, so it can be used often. Gray rabbit fur is dyed with hair pigment. There is also an absolutely safe method in which an aqueous solution of bluing is carefully applied with a brush to the entire surface of the product. The composition should be light blue.
To enhance faded raccoon fur, use hair dye with a lightening effect, as a result of which the product will look gold-plated or silver-plated.
You can renew fox fur with thick potassium permanganate. Treat it carefully with a sponge, not allowing things to get wet.
The faded ends of the fur are painted with suede spray paint. Spray the product slowly, keeping a distance of about 70 centimeters between the fur coat and the sprayer.
Selection of shades for different fur colors
You need to dye the fur in a tone that will be an order of magnitude darker than the existing one. For example, if you need to dye brown mink fur, be sure to use a darker dye. FARA paint – dark brown No. 502 is suitable for natural brown mink. Mink fur, like any other, is dyed differently. New fur that has not been exposed to sunlight (new skins) dyes very poorly; you have to increase the concentration of dye by adding a darker one.
So, for example: you can add half a tube of black paint No. 501 to dark brown paint FARA No. 502. You can increase the concentration even more by adding half a tube of dark brown paint No. 502 to a tube of black No. 501.
New mink or muskrat fur does not dye well, so often after drying it has to be re-dyed in the same way to achieve dark shades. Old (worn) fur of mink, muskrat and other animals, which has been exposed to sunlight, dyes much better and the longer the fur is worn, the more intense the color. Within 30 minutes to an hour, the skin is completely painted with dark brown FARA dye No. 502 or No. 501.
Where to start painting
Before starting work, you need to carefully inspect the product. If there are traces of moth activity, other mechanical damage, or “bald patches,” painting will not save the situation. It’s better to take the item to a studio where it can be given a second life. The fur needs to be combed, debris, dust, and all impurities must be cleared so that the paint is light as evenly as possible. Next, you should choose the appropriate option for working with fur products.
How to dye fur: artificial and natural
Experts advise using professional compounds designed specifically for dyeing fur skins for this purpose. Such products are especially recommended if the hairs are thick and long. You can use hair dye, but you will have to buy several packs, which can be quite expensive. There is an option to coat fur products with spray paint for suede, which is sold in hardware and shoe stores. This product can refresh only the ends of the fur. An aerosol cannot paint the entire thickness of the material. For full coloring you will have to buy a special product or hair dye.
Before work, you need to conduct a test to determine the degree of aggressiveness of the paint:
- dilute a small amount of the product (if it is powder);
- lubricate the material in an inconspicuous area;
- maintain the time specified in the instructions;
- wash off the paint;
- assess the condition of the material;
- proceed with full dyeing if the fur has retained its quality and has not changed its structure within 2 days.
When you want to make your fur 1-3 shades lighter, you can use a lightener rather than paint. The most commonly used products are “Supra” and “Blondan” based on ammonia. It is better to paint artificial products only with specialized compounds with a mark indicating this possibility. Hair dye will immediately ruin this material, so it’s not worth the risk.
Coloring with hair dye
The structure of fur resembles human hair, so its color can be changed with a means familiar to every woman - hair dye. Similar products are sold in any supermarket or household chemicals store, and the choice in terms of prices and shades is very diverse. When purchasing, you should consider the following mandatory requirements for paint:
- durability (usually buy products that can cover gray hair);
- the tone is at least one shade darker than the hair color;
- gentle composition, no caustic substances.
If you want to lighten a dark material, you will first have to bleach it using the appropriate paint. Next, re-dyeing is carried out in the desired shade. It happens that white fur turns yellow from long wear. It will also have to be bleached before staining, otherwise the yellowness will distort the chosen shade. For arctic fox fur you need to purchase more paint than for mink or rabbit. A long fur coat may require up to 5-6 packs of paint.
Spray for coloring fur
If thick fur has sun-bleached ends, it is not necessary to dye it completely. Sometimes it’s enough just to paint the discolored part, and the thing will shine like new. To renew your fur, you need to purchase a suede spray in a can, but you shouldn’t skimp on its quality. A low-quality product can stain hands, things, and human skin for a long time.
Using spray paint is very easy. You need to hang the fur item on a hanger on the balcony, terrace, or cover all surrounding surfaces with cellophane. Then spray paint from a distance of 40-50 cm, working on each area. After finishing the work, you need to comb the fur and let it dry thoroughly. It is permissible to use a hair dryer for drying. Usually the result is enough for one season, then the item will need to be painted again.
Selection of shades for different fur colors
Coloring without prior bleaching should always be done in a tone darker than the original. For example, to update classic brown mink fur, you need to buy dark brown dye. If the fur is new, has not been worn, and has not faded at all, it will be difficult to dye it, since the pigments do not adhere well to such material. You will have to add not only more product, but also take a darker shade. This is not difficult to do: you need to pour a little black paint into the brown paint.
Gray and blue mink are usually dyed the same color, choosing the appropriate tone for the hair. The material will not change shade, but will become brighter and more saturated. Long-haired fur should also be dyed in a tone close to natural, because to dye the hairs well, you will have to put in a lot of effort and buy several packages of the product.
What is needed for work
Before starting the process, you need to prepare water, hair dye or a specialized product, a bleaching agent (if necessary). Also, to wash fur you will need baking soda, ammonia, salt, and a mild detergent.
Preparing the product for painting
Fur skins, individual pieces or a finished sewn fur cap for a hat need to be prepared for painting. Fur pelts must first be tested for exposure to water. Fur, before dyeing, must be degreased and cleaned of dirt by washing. Then it is thoroughly washed in water, dyed, washed and washed again. Skins, due to long-term storage or wear, new skins due to improper dressing may lose their strength and, when exposed to water, swell and tear. That's why all skins need to be tested for water before painting. Separate pieces or thin places of the skin are soaked or thrown into a bowl with warm water and observed for 10 - 15 minutes; if nothing happens to the skins, they remain strong, such skins can be dyed. It happens the other way around: the skins swell, tear when stretched a little, and even worse, become limp, like blotting paper. Such skins must be discarded, otherwise big problems will arise.
Before painting, defects on the skins are eliminated: bald spots, worn out and moth-eaten areas, bites and tears. These places are cut out in the shape of a fish, inserts are sewn in, or simply cut out and stitched. Weak skins, especially at the seams, are strengthened by gluing strips of spunbond non-woven material or non-woven material with MOMENT 1 glue. MOMENT 1 glue is ideal for skins.
Preparing for painting
In order for the fur to be dyed well, the product must be pre-treated, clearing it of dirt and dust. To do this, you will need a solution of 15 g of salt, 15 g of soda, 5 g of ammonia and 7 ml of detergent. Mix all these ingredients and apply with a brush to the fur product. Rinse off any remaining solution. If the necessary ingredients are not at hand, prepare a solution of vinegar, alcohol and water (proportions 1:1:1). Treat your fur with the resulting mixture, and then wipe it with a clean, damp brush.
Don't forget to treat the inside of the product before painting. To prevent deformation during work, wipe the backside with greasy cream or glycerin.
The process of dyeing natural fur with hair dye
Before dyeing, a fur skin or a fur cap for a hat, which you have cut out and sewn from whole skins or worn fur (an old hat or collar), must be degreased by washing, since oily and dirty hair does not dye well. Unpainted areas and stains appear.
Prepare water at room temperature in a cup, add washing powder in a small amount and wash gently. The skins should already be tested for water, as sometimes the skins swell and tear from water. To prevent the skins from tearing, wash them without sudden movements and try not to twist them when squeezing. After washing, the skin is rinsed in clean warm water, lightly wrung out and prepared for painting.
Paint preparation process
The paint is prepared according to the instructions included in the box. Squeeze the hair dye and oxidizing agent (peroxide) out of the tube into a separate bowl and mix everything well. The paint is spread onto the skin or a sewn fur cap using a sponge and rubbed into the fur. The skin is rolled up and placed in a cup. After 10 - 15 minutes they come up and rub the paint well into the fur again. They constantly watch how the skin is dyed. After half an hour, darkening of the fur appears (if the mink is dyed brown), the longer the dyeing, the darker the color. Worn fur dyes faster.
How to dry fur properly
To dry dyed fur, you need to use a hair dryer; it is best and more effective to use an old-style vacuum cleaner with reverse draft. Under the influence of an air stream, the fur quickly dries and fluffs up. If these are new skins and not cut along the belly, they can be pulled over the rules with the fur outward and dried. The cut ones are stretched with nails on the shield with the fur facing out, after drying they are removed and crumpled. Such dyed skins can later be used to sew new hats or repair fur coats. Finished sewn and dyed fur caps for hats made by molding are dried with an air stream and, half-baked, pulled onto the block.
When repairing mink coats, it is sometimes necessary to tint the brown fur directly on the coats. The paint is rubbed with a swab into the faded area, after painting it is quickly washed off with water and dried with an air stream.
A little about secrets...
When making fur hats using the mold method, when sewing fur caps, sometimes it is necessary to insert light fur. After dyeing, pulling a fur cap over the block and drying, it turns out that light fur has a different color. In this case, you can tint the skin directly on the deck by removing the nails. High concentration paint is applied a second time to the unpainted area. After dyeing, the paint is washed off and the fur is quickly dried with an air stream.
As a result of prolonged wear and strong exposure to sunlight, mink fur becomes hard to the touch; such fur must be checked before cutting. A piece of such fur is dyed separately, after drying the fur is dyed disgustingly, the ends of the hair turn grey, the color is very bad. Sometimes, in a hurry, such fur appears on the finished cap, then you need to cut out this piece and replace it with a good one.
Often relying on the quality of the skin, it turns out that after dyeing the skin begins to tear. You can get out of this situation, pull the dried cap onto the finished block and glue the entire cap with pieces of spunbond using MOMENT 1 glue. When pulled onto the finished block, the skin will no longer tear.
When sewing a fur cap for a hat made by molding, you need to remember that the skins decrease in size after dyeing and drying, so the cap is cut out larger in the beat.
Other dyeing methods
Fur can be dyed in many ways. For these purposes, there are oxidative, direct, active, acidic and a whole range of dyes, including natural preparations. When painting, the dipping method is mainly used and, less often, the spreading method. All these methods are labor-intensive and require, in addition to the use of basic dyes, a whole range of additional preparations.
Aerosol paint spraying
When dyeing fur at home, it takes all daylight hours. A finished fur product (hat, fur coat, vest) cannot be dyed using the dipping method; it is necessary to separate the fur skin from the lining material, and during painting the skins may shrink, and the skins decrease in size when drying. You can tint some defective areas (worn or faded), for example, on a fur coat or hat, by rubbing the paint into the fur using a spread method, and then quickly rinse with water and dry. With this method, household cream hair dyes have proven themselves to be excellent. Sometimes such problem areas are tinted with aerosols by spraying paint.
Dyeing process
It is recommended to dye any natural fur a couple of shades darker than its natural color. What means to use:
- hair dye;
- tint shampoo/balm;
- aerosol paint for suede;
- spray dyes for fur;
- clarifier
Bleaching agents damage hair. After bleaching, a fur coat will last less than originally planned. It's worth considering whether drastic changes are needed or whether it should be painted a darker color.
Applying hair dye
Animal fur and human hair are similar in structure. This product is ideal for dyeing fur. Before use, you should test the effect on a small, inconspicuous area of the item. If necessary, first remove yellowness from clothes. After this, they begin painting. High quality ammonia paint is recommended.
How to use hair dye correctly:
- Wear gloves. Dilute the product according to the instructions.
- Apply to the product with uniform, quick movements. Rub it all over the fur - no stains should remain. Movements must be careful so that the hairs do not break.
- Leave for the time specified in the instructions. Wash in clean warm water with shampoo.
- For softness and shine, apply hair balm. Wash off with running warm water.
- Rinse with a solution of vinegar in water. A tablespoon is diluted in a liter of water.
After staining, the cream is applied to the skin again. The item is blotted with a towel and dried. To prevent clothes from shrinking, they are pinned to a hard surface with the fur facing up.
To paint it black, one procedure is not enough. This is done 2-3 times.
You should not do complex dyeing or highlighting of wool yourself. This kind of work should be entrusted to professionals. If you have experience in dyeing your hair this way, you can try:
- apply paint to the ends;
- wrap in foil and leave for the required time;
- wash off carefully.
If you dye a natural fur coat at home correctly, it will last for a long time. The color will begin to fade after 7-9 months. After this time, it is recommended to update the color.
This is interesting
Industrial dye for fur coats is almost identical in composition to hair dye.
Aerosol
Suede product is suitable for dyeing part of the product. The ends of the Arctic fox's coat may turn yellow over time. How to spray paint fur:
- spray at a distance of 70 cm from the item;
- Move the spray all the time so as not to stick the hairs together;
- After spraying, comb through, then they will not stick together.
There is a special paint for natural fur in the form of an aerosol. A small area is dyed with it, for example, a fur collar. This part should not come into contact with the bag; constant interaction will leave a mark. How to do:
- spray the desired area on a jacket or fur coat;
- massage for distribution;
- dry naturally.
You won't be able to paint it a completely different color with a spray. You can enhance the shade, make it richer and deeper.
Other options
You can recolor fur items in the following ways:
- A yellowed mink hat is lightened with the following composition: combine a couple of tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and 10 drops of ammonia. Wet the ends of the fibers so that the liquid does not get on the skin.
- You can paint a red fur coat with a manganese solution. It must be concentrated. Apply the solution with a new dish sponge and make sure that the skin does not get wet.
- Tinting with a tinted shampoo will help make the color deeper and richer. This is true if your fur coat, hat or vest was previously dyed with hair dye. The tint maintains the color to delay the time of the next hair dye application.
- To soften an old fur coat and give it shine, you should use hair balm. This is done after dyeing or mixed with a tint. Finish the staining by rinsing in a vinegar solution.
- Rabbit fur is dyed at home only in extreme cases with delicate dyes. It is very gentle and thin.
- Fur inserts on coats are painted carefully so as not to stain the main material. If the fabric allows it, sew a piece of fabric onto the main part with a few stitches. You can wrap a piece of unnecessary fabric and secure it with a pin.
How to dye faux fur with your own hands:
- remove dirt and dust with a cotton pad and shampoo, rinse with water;
- To update the color, use a toning shampoo;
- use dye for faux fur, but not for hair;
- To ensure uniform distribution of color, the item is pulled and fixed;
- brush along the fibers without missing the fabric;
- After the required time has passed, wash it, comb the fur, and leave it to dry.
Spray for coloring fur
Often finished fur products (hats, fur coats) look excellent when worn for a long time, but faded spots appear in some places. In this case, there is no need to paint the entire thing; it is enough to touch up the problem areas with a spray.
To dye fur, you can use aerosol paint for caring for suede. It consists of metal cans of spray paint.
Aerosol for suede care
You need to choose the right shade correctly, otherwise the dyed fur will differ sharply from the main one. The area that needs to be tinted is cleaned of dirt and can be degreased with alcohol and wiped with a swab. It is advisable to cover the fur with any material, except for tinted spots. We spray the paint at a distance of 30 -40 cm so that the fur does not stick together and a uniform color is obtained. In this way you can get an excellent result, the painted areas will not differ much from natural fur, the paint will last for several months.
Preparation
Before proceeding directly to painting, the fur must be prepared. Clean it thoroughly from dust and dirt so that the paint adheres well. For these purposes, you can use an alkaline solution.
For a liter of water you need to take the following components:
- approximately 15 grams of salt;
- two teaspoons of baking soda;
- 7 ml detergent;
- 5 grams of ammonia.
Mix all ingredients to obtain a homogeneous mass. It is convenient to apply it with a brush. Be sure to wash off the product. You can also use another composition: combine water, vinegar, and alcohol in equal proportions.
The wrong side, the inner side, also needs to be processed. It is necessary to apply glycerin or fatty cream to it.
This will prevent skin deformation. The fur must be pinned to a board so that the item does not lose its shape during the process of dyeing and drying.
If the interior is poorly painted, it will “shine”, creating the effect of sparse fibers. It can be tinted from the inside out. How to paint the inside of the fur? You can use a special product or apply hair dye after testing it on an inconspicuous area.
Using hair dye
It is often used to color arctic foxes. It is quite dense, so it is better to buy two or three packages so that the color is rich and uniform.
Before applying the composition to the entire surface, test it on a small piece.
You can see how it “behaves” when interacting with chemicals. Choose a paint one or two shades darker than the natural color - it will make its color richer.
If a thing has turned yellow, it is better not to paint it, but to lighten it. This can be done using hydrogen peroxide. Only after this is it necessary to apply the coloring composition of the appropriate shade.

Over time, any fur products begin to fade. Learn how to dye fur at home and you can restore it to its original color.
Caring for dyed fur
As a result of painting fur skins, individual pieces, fur caps for hats with persistent household cream hair dyes, carried out using the spread method, by rubbing the paint into the fur, we obtain a stable color. The paint is resistant to light, water and mechanical stress when wearing fur for a long time. Such items do not require special care; the requirements are the same as for any fur product.
The requirements for fur dyed by spraying are completely different. The color is not particularly durable, so it is better to protect such a product from the influence of light, water, mechanical stress and elevated temperature.
In order for the dye to stick better and the fur to shine, it can be treated with a special balm for the care of dyed hair. After this treatment, the fur becomes softer and fluffier.
Fur products require daily care, combing more often, and require thorough cleaning. Much depends on proper storage. Fur should be covered and stored in a dark place.
