Products made from natural fur: yarn making, knitting

Products made from natural materials such as leather and fur will never go out of fashion. Even in ancient times, people covered their bodies with animal skins, and in our times, every fashion-conscious person has fur items in their wardrobe. Fur coats, hats, fur vests, capes - women dream of having this and much more.

Currently, people have learned not only to sew from fur, but also to knit. Moreover, things knitted from fur look very original and stylish. This is also a great way to turn an old worn fur coat into a new vintage item!

Fur products

The first person to come up with the idea of knitting from fur with her own hands was Canadian fashion designer Paula Lishman. It was thanks to her imagination that models began to appear on the catwalk in stunningly beautiful knitted items made from mink and rabbit fur. She revolutionized the fur industry. Now fur knitting has become very popular!

We make fur yarn

The first thing we need to do to start knitting from fur is to prepare the material itself. Surely everyone in the house has an old fur coat, hat or vest that they no longer want to wear, but it’s a pity to throw it away. We invite you to make a completely new and incredibly fashionable item out of it with your own hands. To do this, take fur, for example, mink, and cut it into thin strips 5 millimeters wide. Use a utility knife to avoid damaging the valuable fur. Under no circumstances should scissors be used. It is better to cut the fur in a spiral, so the width of the strip will be longer. But there is no strict rule on how to cut fur fabric, so cut it as you wish.

We make fur yarn

To ensure that the tapes are even, first draw the cut points on the skin. You need to cut along the side of the flesh, slightly stretching and lifting the skin. If you follow these tips, cutting fur will not cause you much trouble.

Sometimes the strips are not long enough, then they can be sewn together with regular thread of a suitable color, monofilament, or glued with special glue. After the fur is cut, we proceed to making the thread itself. We take the first 50 centimeters of the thread, lower it into water, squeeze it well and secure it with a staple to any base. Then, we begin to twist the fur ribbon, just as we twist a wool thread on a spindle. To make this process go faster, you can use any available tools, for example: a drill, mixer or screwdriver.

The twist density is approximately 5 turns per 1 centimeter of fur thread. That is, quite dense. We fasten the twisted section and continue twisting the rest of the thread, do not forget to moisten it thoroughly before doing this. We carry out such manipulations with absolutely the entire fur strip. After the thread is twisted and fixed, it needs to be dried with a hairdryer and combed a little. Before your eyes, the strip will immediately become fluffy. Leave the thread in this taut position until completely dry. Then unfasten the staples and wind the resulting yarn into a ball. That's all, the thread is ready for knitting fur knitwear! Mink looks best in knitted items, but any other fur can be used.

Another way

Another method, although less common, but also quite original, is based on the fact that the thread is twisted around the frame thread and then stitched. Thus, it becomes possible to regulate the twist density and thread thickness. You can use any yarn for the frame thread, but the main thing is that it is not too thin and matches the color of the fur. And the fur must be fluffy, you can use, for example, mink. This method is more economical and allows you to obtain fur yarn of greater length than in the first method. Yarn obtained in this way will be less fluffy, but very durable. In this method, you will have to twist the fur ribbon manually.

For this yarn, you can use the skin of almost any animal, but the most popular is mink. Although recently, thanks to dressing, products made from beaver, fox, rabbit, and sable fur look no worse. For fur knitwear, sheared or plucked fur is perfect.

Let's start knitting from fur

Based on the amount of fur yarn you got, decide on the product. If you have never tried to knit their fur yourself, then you can learn how to do it on a hat. The work is not very difficult, and the thing is always relevant and necessary. There are several ways to knit fur.

Knitting

The easiest way is to knit fur with knitting needles. For this method, many fashion designers use mink fur. Because it actually looks very expensive and stylish. It is knitted in exactly the same way as with yarn, only a fur strip is used instead of thread. Sometimes two threads are folded together: fur and regular yarn to match. This type of knitting requires fairly thick knitting needles. They can be bought at any specialized knitting store or ordered online.

The process of knitting from fur yarn

By the way, some needlewomen crochet their products. But when knitting tightly, too much fur is consumed, so knitting with knitting needles is much more advisable. This method of knitting fur is perfect for large items, capes, vests, and jackets. Because the fabric turns out to be very soft and incredibly pleasant to the touch. This method will definitely not leave you indifferent. But there are also disadvantages to such a product: it will be blown by the wind very much, since it is not very dense, so such a thing definitely needs a lining that you can sew with your own hands.

Threading fur into the mesh - the base

For this method, you will need a mesh, which you can buy at a fabric store or knit yourself. To do this, it is better to use a hook and any thread that matches the fur. The essence of this method is that fur ribbons are threaded into a mesh fabric in a certain order, as if entwining it, thereby creating a “knitted effect.” For this method, the fur yarn does not need to be twisted; it is enough to simply cut it into ribbons. Hats knitted this way look very impressive! First, a mesh cap is knitted, and then fur ribbons are wound around it, like on a frame. It turns out very beautiful. You can decorate such a hat with a leather flower or pin a beautiful brooch.

Knitted hat from fur yarn

If you do everything carefully, the hat will look no worse than in the store, and maybe even better. And it will be very cheap too! To make it, you only need a small piece of mink or silver fox fur and less than one skein of thread of a suitable color. However, you can take any other fur, but this particular fur is ideal for hats. When making things in this way, it should be taken into account that the product will not hold its shape well and will be very soft and elastic. You may have to seal the frame with something, for example, make a lining from dense, rigid fabric.

Harness

This is one of the favorite methods of knitters and consists in tying fur threads with regular yarn. You can work both with crochet and knitting. But crochet is still more convenient. When crocheting, the threads are woven into the fabric at a certain distance. For example, when knitting a hat, you can move in a spiral and knit a fur thread in the same way. You can knit fur in each row or after a certain number of rows. It all depends on whether you want the knitted fabric to be visible. The product knitted in this way turns out smooth and dense. You just can’t pull fur too much, especially mink; it’s better to tie it looser. Since yarn stretches, but fur does not, and if you knit it too tightly, there is a chance that you simply won’t be able to pull the product over yourself. With this knitting, the product holds its shape perfectly and turns out to be very dense and warm.

Sewing fur to a knitted product

A very simple way! Suitable for those who are just learning to work with fur. You will need knitting needles and fur ribbons. For this method, the fur strips also do not need to be twisted. The product - the base - is knitted with an English elastic band. The skin is cut into strips 0.5 centimeters wide and carefully sewn along the line of the convex part of the knitted fabric. The base will not be visible in the finished product. This method is ideal for hats. They turn out voluminous, fluffy and very warm! This method, due to its simplicity and good aesthetic appearance, is very popular among craftswomen.

Thus, if you want a fur hat or jacket, but the family budget does not provide for it, then you can always knit a new thing with your own hands from the remains of mink, silver fox or any other fur. Knitting with fur is a fairly simple activity that even a beginner knitter can do. Provided that she is familiar with the basics of knitting or crocheting. In addition, things knitted in this way look no worse than those that are sold in stores for fabulous money.

Everyone's favorite hot summer is coming to an end. The sun no longer burns, but rather caresses with its rays. But just around the corner, the coolness of the autumn morning, rain, slush and cold. Now is the time to think about your wardrobe for this period.

Of course, many of us prefer ready-made products bought in a store, but there are also those who like to while away their evenings by knitting. So, when we get to work, it is very important to choose high-quality yarn. Currently, a yarn called “mink fluff” is very popular.

So let's look at what yarn is made from and what is needed for it. First of all, let's look at what fibers are. Fibers are divided into two types: natural and chemical.

Natural fibers are fibers of plant and animal origin such as:

- hemp, hemp, jute, flax, cotton;

fluff (undercoat) of animals, sheep and goat wool, etc.

Chemical fibers are fibers that are created in a factory; in turn, they are divided into artificial and synthetic;

  • artificial - acetate, viscose;
  • synthetic - nylon, lavsan.

Mink fluff yarn properties and quality

This is not the entire list of fibers and of course each of us gives preference to our own wishes, in this article we will study in more detail the advantages of a new type of yarn - called “mink fluff”. “Mink fluff” is a yarn that does not roll up very much, despite the fact that items knitted from this yarn are abundantly fluffy.

Mink fluff yarn is produced by various Chinese manufacturers. The fluffiness and thickness of the threads are also different; the main advantage of a product made from mink fluff is that the fabric is light and airy, and the highlight is its luxurious pile.

Yarn price

If you look at the price of this amazing yarn and compare it with mink fur. The question immediately arises: the price for 1 skein is about 4 dollars; such a price for a mink simply cannot exist. What is the yarn made from?

Benefits of knitting.

Basically, the manufacturer indicates on the label of this yarn: 90% wool, 10% polyamide, the weight of such a skein is 50 g, length 350 m. Various products are knitted from “mink fluff”, for example, cardigans, sweaters, hats, pullovers, gloves and many other.

The pile of the product can be compared to angora fabric, but angora is an Angora rabbit, as they say, one or the other. However, even without washing, the “mink fluff” linen looks simply wonderful, although the fluff remains on the clothes.

There is an opinion online that the name “mink fluff” is nothing more than a marketing ploy. That mink does not have such fluff and, for example, Chinese manufacturers only know what they add there. Watch video reviews of this yarn.

But as they say, there are so many people, so many opinions, so only manufacturers know the real information. Still, this yarn makes gorgeous things. The secret of knitting is not to knit too tightly, there are tight products that look good, but not from “mink fluff”, it needs to be allowed to fluff.

As emphasized above, “mink fluff” is a yarn that does not roll easily, despite the fact that it is quite fluffy. So, the resulting products will be durable and will last you a long time. It would seem that all fluffy sweaters bunch up abundantly on the elbows, chest and sides, which is not the case with this yarn.

However, not everyone likes this yarn; most likely, manufacturers still make experiments when creating yarn, making various artificial additions of various fibers. The question remains, after all, from the wool of which animals such interesting yarn is obtained.

When knitting with knitting needles, the loops turn out even and smooth, oh, yes, it’s worth noting that mink fluff yarn is also suitable for machine knitting. But before you start working on the machine, you need to wax the yarn well, because of its hairiness. Afterwards, wash the product and lightly steam it.

The variety of colors is another advantage of this yarn. Everyone will find a color palette that suits their liking. The products are soft, pleasant to the touch, exclusive, and at reasonable prices you can purchase yarn that is right for you.

Mink fluff yarn is a relatively new thread that has recently gained popularity due to the social network Instagram. Reading reviews from experienced knitters, it seems that at the moment they only knit with it, well, that means there is some sense in it and you should definitely try it.

The idea of “mink fluff” has conquered the knitting market, but the attitude towards this yarn is not clear. The composition of the yarn (natural or chemical fibers) is not clear, and yet these are new technologies or a good marketing ploy by Chinese manufacturers.
